Picture this: you’re standing outside of a incredulously crowded mall, you’re in line, shivering because you were too stupid to wear a legitimate jacket. or were you just too naive and thought you’d get inside without the hassle of a line. You’re in line, in line for a coupon that’s not even that good. $10 off a purchase above $15, with a list on the back of all the things in the world you cannot buy with it.
So you’re standing in that line, and your legs are bright red, and theres a couple boys smoking pot behind you to pass the time, and there’s an old lady pushing you forward because she has to buy all of her grandkids their favorite toys.
Are you picturing it? Not so pretty is it?
Look, I understand some people will do practically anything for good deals, but heres my shtick. If we’re so grateful for all the things in our life merely hours before for Thanksgiving and now we’re pushing and shoving each other down for a cashmere scarf, isn’t that sort of ironic?
I seriously don’t get the whole black Friday trend. They’re hardly better deals, the clothing has probably been touched by every child underneath the age of five three thousand times, the employees are grumpy and underpaid, and I could be sleeping.
This Black Friday I didn’t get home until four AM. Not that spending quality time with my best friends wasn’t fun, as the college student I am I appreciate every second with them when I’m home. However, I was literally so delirious from exhaustion I bought a Cinnabon, some alpaca socks, and called it a night.
I guess I understand the whole, I need to buy a television half off because that’s a good investment, but other than that, what’s all the hype?
I can’t say I’ll ever truly be doing another Black Friday, willingly, I’d rather stay home in a turkey induced coma, thankful for all of the wonderful people and things already in my life.
I guess my point of this article is to be a little more thankful for the people in our lives rather than material items. Black Friday is fun and all, but I hope no one forgets the true meaning of these holidays coming up.
