Black Artists You Need To Add To Your Playlists
Genius

Are you sick of the same old songs that are on your current go to playlist? Then you've come to the right place. In honor of Black History Month, I wanted to shine some light on these amazing and alternative black artists that you might not have heard of. If you need some new jams to get you out of a winter rut, if you are someone who is always looking for new music to listen to or if you are looking to create a playlist and need some songs to get started, then check out these artists to add to your playlist!

Syd

You might have already heard of Syd from Odd Future or The Internet, but 2017 has blessed us with her debut solo album Fin. That album has soul and R&B vibes that match her airy and angelic voice. You'll feel so many things after giving this album a listen that it's hard not to add some songs to your playlist. Listen to "Got Her Own" and "Smile More" to start you off.

The Internet

There is no Syd without The Internet! You might have heard of The Internet from Odd Future as well. This is part of where Syd's roots began. I fell in love with The Internet's music so easily because of the soul and R&B vibes that this album gives off. Listen to "Just Sayin/I Tried" to get you started.

Blood Orange

Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange, offers nostalgic and fun tunes that reflect political and black power lyrics. I feel as if Blood Orange's music sounds like Pheonix and Tame Impala had a baby. If you need some funk sounds mixed with soft R&B music, then Blood Orange is the music your playlist needs. Listen to "Best To You" to start you off.

SZA

I love SZA because she takes pride in creating a different sound apart from other artists. Her music definitely showcases that unique sound. If you aren't familiar SZA's music already, listen to "Child's Play" and her new single "Drew Barrymore" to get you on board.

Willow Smith

I already know what you're thinking: Why would I add "Whip My Hair" to one of my current playlists? What you might not know is that Willow has transformed her sound and has made new music for her listeners. Her new music is so much different from "Whip My Hair." Check out her newer songs from an EP she relased on her Soundcloud at the end of 2016.

Lion Babe

You might have already heard the song "Treat Me Like Fire" by Lion Babe, but it is worth it to check out the rest of their music. This duo does a nice job of taking on the electric soul feel throughout their music. Listen to "Jump Hi" to get you started.

Sampha

Add some of Sampha's songs to your playlist from his debut album. He has done some work with amazing people, including Frank Ocrean, and the answer to how lies within the sound in his music. Sampha creates calming music over piano tunes. I consider his music good tunes to study to because it's so calming. Listen to "(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano" to get you started.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
