Being Black In America

It's harder than it should be.

Being Black In America

It's worse than murder to some people.

Being black in America should not be as hard as it is.

Being black in America consists of being judged before you even speak. It's being made fun of when trying to better yourself. It's being murdered for walking in the "wrong neighborhood", for selling CD's, for following directions, for running away, for breathing.

Being black in America means that from the day you are born to the day you die, you are a target. It means having to PROVE THAT YOU DESERVE TO LIVE on American soil. It means living in constant fear of what may happen to your brother, father, uncle, son. It means living in the land of the free, but not really being free.

Being black in America is being an uneducated monkey. Having no right to the first amendment because everything you say is wrong, a lie, or a joke. Having to sit back and watch your brothers be shot down by police officers who get nothing but paid leave and a slap on the back.

Being black in America means that you, as a black person, aren't allowed to speak your mind on the discrimination that you face EVERYDAY because then you are suddenly a racist bigot.

Being black in America = All lives matter ESPECIALLY when a brother is killed by a police officer.

Being black in America means watching your culture get appropriated everyday in every way. It means having to accept the fact that EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE BLACK UNTIL IT'S TIME TO BE BLACK. It means black women deciding to end their bloodline because raising a black child in America is too much of a risk.

Being black in America consists of constantly being asked questions like "do you know your father?", "are you going to college?", "can you afford that?". Being black in America means being followed around the store because the owner thinks you are a thief. Or asked "did you buy that yourself?" when you have ANYTHING nice - cars, clothes, shoes.

Being black in America means having to deal with people of the caucasian race swearing up ad down they they know what we go though on a daily basis. It means having to deal with those same caucasians swearing that they have no idea what white privelage is.

Being black in America means that you'll always have a mugshot. You won't get a nice school picture of you in a suit and tie. Your accomplishments won't be brought up either. No matter how many people you have helped or how much you have done for the community, you get arrested and your mugshot will be viral in under 60 seconds, along with how you got suspended from the 5th grade for punching someone in the arm.

Being black in America means being forced to fit in.

Being black in America means that you can get suspended for your hair being too big. Not being hired because of your name. Being made fun of for your natural features because they are "too big"or "too dark", but then seeing an add on tv for brazil butt-lifts, some kind of lip plumper, or a new tanning lotion.

Being black in America is such a negative thing and has been for what seems like forever. It seems as though we can't do ANYTHING right. We are treated like dirt sometimes and we as a whole are DONE putting up with this madness.

Black lives DO matter. My people, we must pray for each other in this time of need. We need to stay strong in our faith and in our roots. Never forget where you came from and what you are fighting for.

In the words of Jesse Williams: Just because we are magic, does not mean we aren't real! Never let your voice be silenced.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
