To my Un-Favorite Uncle,

Happy birthday, Uncle Ray! I wanted to do something special for you this year for your birthday and this worked out perfectly because I’m very broke, so I decided to write an article about you. I’m kidding of course, but this article is for you. The reason it’s so early is because you just so happen to be born on the same day as my father and two days apart from Mimi so the article schedule is a bit crazy this October, but regardless, I just wanted to say thank you for being a decent uncle even if you’re not my favorite. Kidding again, jeez I bet anyone who reads this thinks I’m a horrible person and you’re a saint. Little do they know the roles are quite the opposite!

I wanted to say thank you for everything you do. I know I’m a bit of a handful and you spoil me to no end. I don’t deserve it sometimes (I’m not saying don’t stop by any means), but I appreciate you none the less. I really enjoy when we go out to dinner, or shopping, and our excursion to New York. I learned that you’re not that bad of a guy, but in all honestly we don’t always have to go out. Don’t tell anyone, but I just like spending time with you sometimes. Now excuse me I have to go wash my mouth out with soap.

I think my favorite memories of you is when you lived with us. Do you remember that? I think I must have still been in grade school. I never knew why or how, but I just knew that I liked your company and the fact that you were right next door if I ever needed you. I loved it at the dinner table and especially when Mimi would come over because I’d think it was a party. After dinner you used to say, “don’t snore tonight I need to sleep.” Externally I was rolling my eyes and sticking my tongue out at you, but internally I was smiling. My second favorite memories are our newly annual Black Friday shopping trips. Those are pretty crazy and memorable, too.

So, dear Uncle, thanks for being there. I know you weren’t always there sometimes, but that’s okay, I think. The times that you are here makes up for it for the most part. You’re a pretty awesome uncle and I love visiting your pink house, although, it can do without all the cars to be honest. Kidding of course. I want you to know that I’m always going to be here, I’m always going to be your niece. I’m going to be the one that teases you about your diet, kicks you under the table, judges you when you mouth kiss my dog, records you when you’re acting really odd, takes weird pictures of you, and most importantly loves you all the same. This birthday, the next birthday, and hopefully a couple more after that. Love you Uncle Ray.

Love,

Your Gluten Loving, All Time Favorite Niece

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
