Biology Is More Than Just A Class

My grade was not the only take away from the class.

Biology: a class that is required in high school.

A popular major amongst those wishing to pursue any career in the medical field. A field that has an ever expanding definition.

According to Google, biology can be defined by the study of living organisms, divided into many special fields based off of their origin, morphology, behavior, anatomy, physiology, and distribution.

However, according to myself, biology is defined as not only my favorite school subject, but the sole reason that I was able to meet some of my best friends.

Origin: defined as the point or place where something begins.

In class, we were all from different towns, took different classes throughout high school and all shared walking into Biology 1107 for their last class of the day. No matter the origin, the final destination was the same.

Morphology: defined as the branch of biology, and the relationships between all structures.

A few had known each other before taking the class. Others have never talked before. Started as strangers, left with a group chat named “Biology Sisters” that hasn’t ended even though the class has.

Behavior: defined as the manner that one acts or behaves.

The sheltered few, got a taste of the wild side. The strength of every individual in the group is inspirational.

There was not only more experiences to add to life, but life was finally lived itself. A mix of personalities, and just like a solution, all personalities blended perfectly.

Anatomy: defined as the branch of science concerned with the bodily structure and function of humans.

Some short, some tall, but all were equally as beautiful.

Even though all their eyes could function properly, each individual needed the group to appreciate their own beauty that others see.

Physiology: defined as the way in which an organism or bodily parts function.

Class notes and snacks sprawled all around a table. One writing on a whiteboard, one asking the questions, and a few giggling from googling biology jokes.

All played a different part in the study groups, but served to one greater function of learning the material.

Distribution: defined as the way in which something is shared among a group or spread over an area.

A few finishing their senior year. A few going to school Connecticut. One only a train ride away in New York City.

One who will be commanding across the seas, and eventually across the world. One in another region of the country, who is made fun of when she returns home saying y’all.

Across the state, the country, and maybe even the world the locations may change, but the bond won’t.

A major topic being studied in my college biology class right now is evolution.

Evolution, discovered by Charles Darwin, is defined as the gradual development of something.

Darwin’s work was sufficient in explaining the gradual changes in physical appearances, his theory however is lacking the explanation things beyond physical appearances.

Evolution could help to explain the gradual change of how nine strangers became best friends.

Biology seeks to explain life.

Biology 1107 class was the reason my life was made better by 8 girls.

This one’s for you: Pam, Anna, Angie, Sarah, Sammy, Erin, Casey and Maggie.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
