7 Things Only 'Big Brother (US)' Fans Understand

In This Article:

Personally, I've never been a fan of reality television. All the different shows about housewives and bachelors don't really interest me, and I tend to always confuse one with another. I don't enjoy following the lives of real people, but instead I prefer the fictitious stories of my favorite characters from comedic reruns.

However, Big Brother is an exception. This television show features participants from all over the nation competing for the grand prize of five-hundred thousand dollars through a series of mental and physical competitions. Those who are selected for the show are banned from having contact with the outside world and live in a large, luxurious house together. The series features punishments, alternative prizes, and unique twists.

As an observer of the show, you can watch the intricacies of human relationships and the development of paranoia that eventually plagues every member of the household. This is what initially interested me about the show: the psychological perspective. How does each person react? Who trusts who, and why?

My journey as a fan continued, allowing me to eventually connect with other fans. Through this process, I began to realize that us fans all have some characteristics in common.

1. We Predict the Showmances on Day One

Although many houseguests claim to have no interest in finding their soulmate on the show, that's not always what happens. After iconic couples such as Jeff and Jordan came together, more participants throughout the years have used Big Brother as an opportunity to meet their match. Fans always predict who will end up with who and love to watch how these predictions unfold.

2. We Yell at the TV During Competitions

Many of the mental competitions on the show are actually quite difficult, forcing participants to memorize long sequences and trust their immediate gut reactions. During these comps, the viewers can often watch everything the players see and try to choose the correct answer with them. Sometimes, though, our favorite guests aren't necessarily the brightest, so their answers don't align with our own.

3. We Pick the Winner at the Beginning

While the houseguests are trying to make good first impressions among each other, they're also making their first impressions to the audience. When viewers are being introduced to the players, we already tend to know who we like, who we don't, and who we think will make it to the end.

4. We Avoid Twitter if We Didn't See the Recent Episode

Social media is riddled with spoilers the second that any movie or show is released, but this is especially true for Big Brother. There are many accounts on Twitter that are specifically devoted to Big Brother, including some who constantly watch the 24-hour, all-access live feeds of the cast. This ultimately always leads to some fans knowing what happens before the episode has even aired, which means that those who want to watch it for themselves need to stay away from their phones.

5. We Try To Find Our Favorite Players On Social Media

There are some moments to avoid social media for the show, and there are other moments where one has to spend a bit of time trying to find their favorite houseguests' Instagrams, Twitters, Snapchats. We can get a little more insight into their lives before the entered the house and find more ways to show our support as fans. It's also a way to potentially meet other viewers!

6. We Plan to Sign Up When We're Older

If you're a super-fan of the show, you've inevitably fantasized about what kind of player you would be. For those who have watched for awhile, you can see which strategies work and which do not, which might encourage you to apply for the show yourself.

7. We Love Julie Chen

I truly think that if someone else hosted the show, I would not be nearly as interested in it. Julie Chen has a bubbly personality, but still has the ability to stay calm when drama arises. She knows how to catch us up on all the details while adding her own jokes to the mix. We all know America's favorite player of all time is definitely Mrs. Chen.

After over twenty seasons, you would think the show would get stale, but it truly has not. Every season brings a different group of competitive individuals that are always ready to compete.

Get ready for another wild season this summer.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
