During elementary, middle and high school, when the science teacher brought out the TV, everyone was giddy. Everyone knew what was coming: Bill Nye the Science Guy. Bill Nye was always my favorite way to learn science. He was cheesy funny and always had cool experiments to teach us how things worked.
Up until a few years ago, I respected the man so much. He’s a very smart man, but in my opinion, he’s very arrogant. Anything he doesn’t agree with is clearly wrong, and it seems like he’s too good for everyone.
Ken Ham, founder and chief executive officer of the Young Earth creationist ministry Answers in Genesis (AiG), invited Bill Nye to a debate after viewing a YouTube video of Bill Nye talking about how a large group of people in the U.S. deny the theory of evolution.
Bill Nye agreed and the debate aired on Feb. 4, 2014 and revolved around the question “Is Creation a viable model of origins?”
I, having an obvious bias being a Bible-believing Christian, watched the debate in disgust. While a lot of media said that Nye won the debate by default because he presented widely-accepted scientific facts, I didn’t think there was a clear winner. I still believe in the creation presented in the Bible. I do believe that Nye is a good speaker, but he’s very arrogant. He laughed in Ham’s face at some of the facts that Ham was presenting. Ham is a very smart man and politely let Nye speak, even when his time had run out.
Two and a half years after the debate, The Ark Encounter, a full replica of Noah’s Ark from the Bible, has opened at the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. It was officially opened to the public on July 7, 2016. AiG, who’s founder is Ham, is the organization the runs this museum. Ham invited Nye to tour the museum and he accepted yet again.
In a Facebook post from Ham, he was saying that Nye was calling the scientists at AiG incompetent. Ham even said, “I did ask him if we could be friends, but he said we could be acquaintances with mutual respect, but not friends.” I find this so arrogant. Reading the post was eye opening about the true character of Nye. It baffles me that some people are so closed-minded.
A lot of people say that Christians are close-minded because we believe what we believe, yet here is Bill Nye being rude and bashing my beliefs when I could do the same with him. Ham presents creationism with facts and figures that I have never realized before. I just knew I believed the Bible. When Ham presented the facts for me, it truly cemented my beliefs for me.
Visiting the Ark Encounter would be a great experience. Just seeing what actually happened, because I truly believe it did, would be so cool. I truly believe in the work Ken Ham is doing. He is such a great voice in world for Creationists. I can’t wait to hear more from him in the future.
