To My Big,
One of the first and most exciting moments of my sorority career was the night of my Big/Little reveal. I stood outside the room with the rest of my new member class, all of us shaking with excitement and nerves. We knew we were getting our bigs, but we didn’t know how or who. It took about five excruciating minutes for one of the sisters to come out with a bag full of, of all things, socks. We were obviously confused. The sister asked us to take off our socks and shoes, and replace them with the socks she gave us.
One by one, we were led into the decorated room. There was a long “yellow brick road” made out of canvas, and two sisters holding a huge sheet at the front of the room. The sheet was painstakingly painted to resemble Oz, complete with Dorothy’s ruby red slippers. As per instructions, I moved to the front of the room to stand in front of the sheet. There were three unidentified pairs of feet poking out, but only one with socks to match mine. I remember jokingly stepping on your feet, before standing back and asking “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” In one of the most exciting moment of my college career, the sheet dropped while you shouted, “I’m not a witch, I’m your big!”
I remember instant tears of happiness and quite literally jumping into your arms. To be honest, the entire experience is kind of a blur, because everything was so crazy. I remember being tapped on the shoulder by a girl in my new member class and being very confused, before eventually realizing that she was my new twin! The rest of the night was filled with shirts and presents and meeting the rest of our branch at the diner for dinner.
As exciting as this night was, it was only the beginning. It brought me a woman who showed me exactly what it’s like to be a true sister. You paved the way for my involvement in this organization and showed me what it means to really care about your sisterhood. Even now, after you've graduated, you still guide me in ways that you don't even realize.
There's nothing better than venting to you about my life or asking your opinion on my life's problems. I look up to you and your successes and hope that one day, I can have my shit together as well as you do. I'm beyond proud to have such an amazing, kind, and intelligent woman as my big. Because of you, I strive to be a better woman for my organization and myself every single day.
Thank you for everything.
