Big Sean and Jhene Aiko has released a duet album titled “Twenty88.” This is their first duet album together, but they have done work in the past on Sean’s album “Dark Sky Paradise.” The title meaning, however, is still unknown officially. It might have something to do with the fact that Sean turned 28 years old this year and his birth year is 1988. Twenty88 has only 8 tracks. Although it is a very short album the songs are extremely catchy and deep. The base of the album is that Jhene and Sean are in a relationship. Throughout the album, they go through ups and downs such as miscommunication, cheating, lying, sex, and privacy issues. Jhene Aiko is known for her “earthy and high” flow with her music. Here she brings a totally different vibe and knocks it out the park with her vocals. Here’s the question: are all the tracks in sequence? Do they connect to each other and make a story? Or is the theme of the album just about the truths of a relationship and each song has its own meaning? You decide. One known thing is this album is groundbreaking and truly some of their best work.
1. Deja Vu
This song has a great rhythm to it. The beat is nice and smooth. Something you would get excited for when you hear it playing on random. The base of the song is Big Sean starting off basically saying I see you're back on the scene after being incognito for some time now. I see that you have a man now but you should come visit me, let's reminisce about the times we use to have... and by times I mean sex. Then Jhene swoops in with amazing vocals (way different than how she would regularly sing) and says look, I’m just playing with you right now. Simply just playing with your emotions out of spite because when we were together you did exactly the same thing. Revenge is a bitch but she is sweet.
Quotable lyrics: "I've been fuckin around with you, playing with your emotions like I’m Chris Tucker on Friday."
2. Selfish
"How could you be so selfish?" Looks like Sean and Jhene are on the rocks in this 'I'm not taking your bullshit anymore' duet. Big Sean starts off the song very upset. He feels like he gave up a lot to be with this girl and she's not giving anything back. Like an 80/20 sort of thing. But Jhene feels like he should be the last one talking about selfishness. She feels like her faithfulness is taken for granted. Don't lie on our love! She says, "You wonder why the past has changed us." This beat is a different one, you can tell they experimented with different instruments. Nice booming bass. Very clever with the sound of the phone ringing in the background.
Quotable lyrics: "You ain't drinking no more that's bullshit, I heard you're taking more shots than a full chip."
3. On the way
If you need a new song to roll down your windows and drive to while the wind is blowing in your hair, this might be the song you want to hear. Incredibly catchy chorus, you can't help but bump your head to. In this song, it's been a long day for Jhene and Big. After a long, hard day at work, all they want to do is tear each other apart (In a good way). When Aiko and Sean sing together at the same time, it just sets off a chill vibe every time. Ending the song, they sing: We stress, we grind, one time, three times, you time, me time, we time, we roll, tree time, rewind, late night, be mine, yeah, and you know that's for sure, I clear the schedule so you know that's a go, Ok." You can't help but rewind that one-part every time.
Quotable lyrics: "Got that bomb pussy, it just detonated."
4. Push it
"On the sink, on the couch, on the bed, on the floor, on the porch, on the stove, on the road. Touch my toes, outta breathe, take it slow. I wanna feel it in my soul!" What would the world be without 'baby making music?' Under populated, that's what. Here's a new smooth jam to add to your sexual music collection. In this song, these two artists are continuously making love. Everywhere. "Gotta keep it going baby don't stop." Very short song, but it has a 'I want to get naked' vibe to it. "Bring your outside, inside." Interpret that however you like but that sounds like it's about to do go down it the bedroom. While this song is playing, you can imagine a room full of smoke, incenses, and two people making love.
Quotable lyrics: "Imma give my heart to you, while taking all of you."
5. 2 Minute Warning
Any song is going to be good when you bring any legend to feature on it. The fifth song on the album features the great Detail, KCI and Jojo. The vocals between Detail, KCI, Jojo, and Aiko are astonishing! Even though they only have the chorus and the outro, their harmonization really makes the song. Another sexy track. That quick phone call from your partner saying that they're on their way to... spend some time with you. Damn Sean! Back at it again with the hidden phases and punchlines. Sean has most of this song to himself and as usual, it's filled with a bunch of memorable similes and metaphors.
Quotable lyrics: "When you hop on top and turn around I can't handle it. I might pass out like a pamphlet."
"You the real real no GMO."
"I'm talking mouth to mouth, I'm talking cheek to cheek, I'm talking waist to waist, I'm talking eye to eye, you know body language we don't need to speak."
6. Talk Show
Let's take a blast to the past with this next song. It starts off putting you in a setting on an old late night talk show (Maybe 70s or 80s). The host introduces them to the show and Jhene, soft-spoken, starts it off with being oh so kind to Sean. "At least I got my baby. Right? Baby?" Sean continues to talk about love and how precious it is, to be happy if you got it because you can lose it so quickly. No one is realer than his girl and no one can take her place. But nothing is ever perfect. Jhene stops the 'ooos and awwes' to say "You ol' sneaky ass nigga." Apparently Big was "out here fucking these bitches." Sean is now outraged. How could she bring a private matter out in the public? “Since we inviting everyone in the bedroom, let's take the covers off.” This song has got to be the most interesting and well thought out song on the album. Again, with the punchlines and metaphors. But this time these quotes will have you rewinding over and over again because they're just so deep and abstract. Some things will fly over your head; others will hit your heart like a brick.
Quotable lyrics: "I'm from LA, but the sun is always shining so a lot of people are shady."
"I know that both our families are divorce and suing, but this ain’t repetition it's evolution."
"Fuck is you saying? Who are you talking to? Never call you a bitch, but who are you barking to?"
"You got these people in our business like youandiiis."
"If time is the only thing we can't afford then why would we waste it?"
7. Memories Faded
Everybody has that one ex that they will never let go. No matter if they're both it a relationship, your heart is always with that one ex. Big and Jhene are reminiscing on the memories they used to have in a past relationship. "Memories of us are getting way too old." Time to link up and rekindle. The beat for this one is very steady. The lyrics are really what you're here for, the beat compliments the words perfectly.
Quotable lyrics: "You never played games, you played your card."
"You covered all the bases like you knocked it out the park."
8. London Bridge
You can truly hear Jhene Aiko's vocals in this one. She's an amazing singer overall but you can tell she went a different route. Not her usual flow. The keyboard sets the tone for this song. Nice and smooth. Get ready for this chorus to get stuck in your head, not like you would want to get rid of it. No one ever wants to walk away from a loved one. This song sums that all up. After a breakup your whole world crumbles, so fix it before you see a crack. Communication is key. Sometimes you just have to tell your partner how much they mean to you. However, from 2:27 to 2:34 Sean switches up and starts to sing??? Kind of had a Drake feeling to it. Unexpected. If you're ever on a rocky road with your relationship, this is the song to listen to. "Convince me that we're not meant to be, that we have to be." Don't give up on something you love.
Quotable lyrics: "8 billion people in the world and I still chose the one."
"You kept me driven, that's why I can see us going the distance."
