The Big Picture Of The Election

Taking a neutral standpoint it is healthy to look at a different aspect of our election.

It is no secret that our country is facing a challenging time. Since the first day the candidates for the election were announced, we have seen huge amounts of controversy on both sides of the political parties. The tension and animosity has only increased as we furthered the campaigning, and now that we have announced our president, Donald Trump, we have witnessed a whole new level of difficulties. While I will not be taking a stance in this article, I will admit I believe that we as a country would benefit greatly if we looked at this situation in a different view.

I will not excuse President Trump for the inappropriate things he has said. Although, I have noticed a lot of Americans terrified of the things that will come under his presidency. I do not fault anyone for feeling uneasy; I believe this is to come with any drastic change, especially a new president. I ask you to remember how government works. Our new president will not be able to tear up every law that we currently have and rewrite them how he sees fit. The laws still have to pass through our judicial system just like they always have. While he does have power, I do not see him putting as huge of a dent in our country as some people may think. Just keep in mind there are other people involved in our government as well.

I respect and understand the idea of protesting when it is peaceful. I am in no way speaking against this, but I do ask for us to all step back and look at the bigger picture. We are becoming divided as a country. The country was founded on democracy, the idea that every person has a voice and that we the people choose who will lead us. There will always be people unhappy with the situation. Sometimes we may not agree or like how things turn out, but we have faith that our country is strong enough to withstand and make it through challenges we may face. The best way to do this is to remain united. We are the UNITED States, for goodness sake! I am firm in the fact that we should not group a certain party or belief into one single stereotype. I have seen Republicans grouped into a racist, redneck, narrow-minded category. This is absolutely not always true. Every Republican has their own personal and individualized beliefs and stances on numerous different things. I have seen the same for the Democratic party. It is unfair to judge someone just based on how they identify before we discover their beliefs further. The beauty of America is we have the freedom to feel the way we do. Why not respect that someone feels differently instead of crucifying them for it? I enjoy healthy debates. I like hearing why someone feels the way they do. I will admit I used to not feel this way, but overtime I have learned to respect and understand difference of opinions. It's a beautiful trait to have.

The brutal honest truth is that Donald Trump is now our president. He won using the same method we have used for many, many years. Refusing him as your president is doing nothing. Deleting people who voted for him on Facebook does nothing. If you used your American right to vote, you should feel proud regardless. Be proud that you exercised your right as a citizen and had a say. Even if it did not end how you wanted, this is not the end of the world (or country) as we know it. Coming from a neutral standpoint I can assure you that there has been a president in our lifetime that someone was not fond of. It's the name of the game and if we respect others, follow what is happening in our government and use our rights as citizens I do have faith that everything will be alright.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
