I am unsure if you have seen the new Netflix show, "Big Mouth" by creator Nick Kroll. It is a goldmine! And I don't usually say that about a ton of tv shows (mostly only "Rick and Morty" and "How To Get Away with Murder"). It is about a group of young teenagers going through puberty... which already isn't easy. The show "Big Mouth" is honestly something special and I wish it was around when I was going through puberty... because man can I relate to a lot of it just like I am sure hundreds of others can as well. The show has garnered a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.2 on IMBd and rightfully so.
Big Mouth is a quality piece of comedy. The main characters are all 13 which causes some people, mostly mothers, to say that the show shouldn't be aired because of its harsh jokes and crude language. But I personally think that is why it should be shared. If we are being honest with ourselves at 13, you are already going through sex-ed class so why not learn it in a way that is more realistic than a gym teacher spouting std facts at you that you are not actually listening to.
The show also allows for a more open dialogue about puberty, sex, and the human body. It allows for the discussion whether in the form of questions or reminiscing on memories of a topic that has become so taboo in our society, which should not be the case. The show pulls from real experiences of the creators and actors which allows for more connection with those who watch either an episode a day or binge-watched the whole thing in about 3 hours.
And you can not forget those hormone monsters. I do not think I have seen a more accurate representation of the hormones, emotions, and feeling that occur during puberty in my entire life. Maya Rudolph and Nick Kroll do amazing jobs in bringing basically any emotion a puberty-ridden teenager could feel and bring it to life. Thank you, Nick and Maya, for these amazing characters I did not know I needed.
If you have not watched Big Mouth yet, I highly recommend giving it a chance... even the parts that just do not seem that realistic. I bet you will enjoy it more than you think you will. It is a fantastic show that highlights an issue that literally affects everyone. Plus once you are done with season one, you will be begging for season two to come out ASAP.
Happy watching!!!
