I have never been one to analyze friendships and see how much can be shared and hidden within them, but since watching Big Little Lies I have gained a new perspective on friendship—and a lack of it—and how that can change the entire course of your life.
SPOILERS AHEAD
In the shocking, raw and incredible finale of Big Little Lies, you see five women who have largely been at odds with one another come together for a common cause. The way that they band together, even in the heat of their disagreements, to save Celeste from her manipulative, violent and abusive husband was astounding.
What was even more astounding to me, though, was how close Celeste and Madeline seemed to be throughout the series, yet Madeline had no idea that Celeste was being abused by her seemingly “passionate” husband Perry.
What was even more interesting to watch was the dynamic between Jane and Celeste, who had each been abused by the same man without realizing it, yet for the duration of the series most of their focus was on Madeline. The other women, Renata and Bonnie, were always on the edge of the core group of women—never quite liked by all of them—but still, they came together when help was needed and this banding together was inspiring to watch.
This show, even in just a few episodes, was filled with sadness and suffering and love and joy like I have never seen before. In the end, Big Little Lies left me with a profound appreciation for the true friends in my life.
