It has been about 2 years since Big Hero 6 has hit the theaters. It is the first film to be produced by The Walt Disney Animation Studio after their big hit "Frozen" in 2013. While it had some merchandise for a small amount of time, it is still grossly an underrated movie.
Big Hero 6 is a movie that touched on a few topics that is not greatly discussed in typical children's movies. It showed us the 5 stages of grief. Now normally we don't usually see that in a person as young as Hiro Hamada (Main Character, boy genius) as he is 14 years old in the movie. He lost his older brother Tadashi Hamada (RIP Big brother) in an event that Hiro wanted to attend so he could have the chance to be at the same school as his brother. Tadashi was a great example of a big brother. He allowed Hiro to do what he wanted but because he was helping raise a genius brother, he could only do so much. For the short time, he was in the movie, Tadashi was a pivotal character in Hiro's life and was crucial for his character development throughout the whole movie.
Another great thing about Big Hero 6 is the diverse cast. As you can clearly see that Aunt Cass (Hiro's Aunt) is white, but Hiro and Tadashi aren't "white looking" because they are also from an Asian descent. Considering the city they live in "San Fransokyo" is a mash-up between Tokyo and San Francisco, it is safe to assume that they are at least Half Japanese and half White. Now we don't have any actual confirmation but given the Japanese last name and the aunt being "white passing" it is great to see that the main character is at least a person of color. The last movie we had with a person of color being the main character is Princess Tiana from the Princess and the frog. Everyone else was a different race or ethnicity. The voice actors themselves were all diverse, they were all from different backgrounds and it was great to hear the different ways they would say Hiro's name.
It is a film adaption from the Marvel Comic Book "Big Hero 6." Now if you actually look up what the marvel version of Big Hero 6 was, you can see that it is totally different than The Walt Disney Animation Studios version. Marvel gave Disney the opportunity to take one of their ideas and make it completely their own.
When Hiro Hamada and Baymax showed up at Disneyland and at Walt Disney World, it was great. They're such fun characters to meet, and they were my favorite duo to meet at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Sadly though in July of 2015, Hiro was sent back to San Fransokyo. They put Baymax at Epcot in future world, near Character Spot.
Overall Big Hero 6 was a movie that talked about and showed how someone would deal with the 5 stages of grief, how you can turn someone's death into motivation to do better in life, surround yourself with good friends and family, and give kids a diverse cast to look up to.
