As a single young adult, it's so easy to get caught up in the idea of giving and receiving love. It's no secret that many women spend hours dreaming about their future soulmate, and men (whether they admit it or not) do the same. Unfortunately, this obsession for intimacy leaves many hearts empty and yearning for something more, since, let's face it, not all of us are meant to find our person during college.
The good news is that God has given us tons of advice on dealing with a lonely heart, and I hope these few verses give whoever reads this comfort and reassurance. Allow Jesus Christ to be your first love, and He will lead you to the one your heart is so longing for!
1. 1 Corinthians 7:32-35
I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.
This verse is perfect to show how you can still bring God so much glory while being single. In fact, now is the time to go out of your comfort zone and live fully for Him!
2. Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
3. Isaiah 54:5-6
For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts in his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. For the Lord has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off, says your God.
Since the Church is God's spouse and we are the Church, God is called to be our first love. While waiting on an earthly husband or wife, it's incredibly important to spend time getting to know your Creator and falling in love with Him.
4. Ecclesiastes 3:1
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.
5. Matthew 6:33-34
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
6. Song of Solomon 3:5
I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.
7. Proverbs 31:30-31
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
8. 1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
9. Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
10. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
God has a plan for you that is more wonderful than you can imagine. Spend this time of singleness praising Him instead of dwelling in anxiety and impatience. He will fulfill you in a way that's better than what you have planned; so next time you're feeling lonely, let Jesus make your heart full!
