What Can We Do To Prevent Bias and Promote Free Thinking

When talking about very sensitive topics abroad, people tend to take different sides in a discussion but we must ask are these sides influenced by some outside force? People have different beliefs and opinions and can have these in a democracy like our own which is what makes us a free country but when those beliefs interfere with decision making there tend to be disagreements and this is what is defined as a bias. We see it everyday and often would dismiss it because people are entitled to their own beliefs but we must take into effect that some of these decisions that are being made will be for someone's own personal agenda.

Bias is not something I particularly agree with when it comes to discussing certain topics since I believe in non-biased decision making and options that give people a better opportunity to look at all of the options. It limits people from understanding that they are more than a few particular viewpoints and that is the main reason why bias is something that shouldn't be a particularly good way of thinking.

We all have bias and that is a part of our human nature to think differently as individuals but when it comes to writing or any sort of way of communicating a certain topic, it should be the duty of the individual to deter themselves from using any sort of bias. What may be communicated will be persuasive to people and limit their ability to think in terms of having their own intellectual ideas created. By leaving out any type of bias, people are allowed to think freely for themselves and this is one of the main reasons why any bias should be left out of communicating any type of ideals.

Is it hard to leave out bias? Quite simply, yes. A reason why bias is seen more and more now is because people are given more opportunities to communicate in today's world especially people of the current generations where the Internet has taken over as one of our easiest and most effective ways of communicating. Bias is even more prevalent to today's generation and in the event of having the easier way of communicating the bias can spread to many more people and also brings more people into the same mix. The way bias can only be prevented in the ways we communicate is by our main way of thinking and enabling us to spread that type of thinking to others in a safe free thinking way.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
