Two weeks ago, a University of Toledo (UT) student wrote about 13 reasons why UT is better than Bowling Green State University (BGSU). (Yes, really!) Last week, two BGSU students fought back, claiming that BG is better than UT with 17 reasons of their own. I wanted to get in on the action, so I combined their two numbers and have compiled a list of 30 reasons why BG has been, is, and will always be superior to “that school up north”.
- Let’s start simple, shall we? In rankings of Ohio colleges, BGSU finds a comfortable home in spot number 21. Toledo? Number 30.
- Bowling Green State University is considered “ moderately difficult ” to get into, whereas UT is categorized as “ non-competitive .” As you may have guessed, the fact that BGSU is harder to get into leads to…
- Smarter students! Bowling Green is rated number 32 for smartest students in colleges in Ohio. Where is Toledo, you ask? Not ranked.
- This could result in the fact that BGSU has spot number 18 in academics , where, you guessed it, Toledo isn’t even on the board.
- Money is important, right? BG may be a slightly more expensive school to attend, but our average post-graduate indebtedness is nearly $4,000 less than UT students.
- Furthermore, it is proven that more people like attending BGSU , as more first-year BGSU students return than first-year UT students. They’re probably transferring to BG, if I had to guess.
- Our colors have great meaning behind them. Orange is a combination of energy and happiness. It catches your attention, is a symbol of strength, endurance and creativity. Brown symbolizes simplicity, friendliness, reliability and growth. The color blue , one of Toledo’s colors, comes across as “cold or uncaring” and can “dampen spirits”… Sounds like Toledo to me!
- Is there a lot to do in Toledo? Absolutely! However, your beloved Franklin Park Mall is home to many a violent shooting. In BG, we have golf courses, a quarry and more awesome bars than you can count on both hands (but we don’t need to tell you that, as you guys come to them all the time).
- BGSTD? That joke has been around since the 80's, ya'll! Sorry, we can’t hear your outdated jokes over our 80 place ranking for sexually healthy colleges in the nation. And Toledo? You are at 95.
- In the spirit of being a Dance Marathon lover and decent human being, congratulations are certainly in order for UT’s RockaTHON that, in 2014, raised over $100,000. In the spirit of rivalry, last year BG raised over 300,000. (But seriously, it’s all for the kids. Any amount is awesome!)
- Let’s leap into some statistics, shall we? In terms of campus beauty , BGSU was ranked in the sixth spot, whereas Toledo found its home at 21.
- Don’t worry though! Toledo snatched a number six ranking that beats out BGSU! Unfortunately, it was in the category of “unhappiest cities in America.”
- BGSU ranked among the top 100 party schools in the United States, coming in at spot 61. I guess it makes sense why UT students come to BG to party, as they are nowhere to be found on the list.
- In the UT student’s article about why they are better, she mentions all of their dorms are air-conditioned. Apparently dorm air-conditioning is not a deciding factor in the category of “best college dorms” because BGSU steals spot 21 to Toledo’s 48.
- BGSU, non-surprisingly, comes out on top of yet another college statistic, ranking number seven in athletics . Toledo follows right behind in spot number eight. However, as our 1992 10-9 victory over the Rockets shows, one point makes all the difference.
- Bowling Green was named by WalletHub to be the 28 best college town in America. If you’re looking for Toledo, start scrolling. Keep scrolling. Yep, keep going. Ah, there they are. 204. The list only went to 280.
- You may have more dining halls , but quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality! BG is ranked at 13, with Toledo falling behind in 17 place.
- Hey UT-ers, interested in men? Well, you’ve made the wrong choice! Statistics show that Toledo’s 29 ranking in the category of “ hottest guys ” is squandered by BGSU’s 15.
- And lady lovers, don’t feel left out… you’ve made the wrong choice as well. BG snags the 13 spot in “hottest girls” whereas Toledo takes spot 22.
- That score of 27 may have put you ahead in our 2014 contest on the field, but it does put you 21 points behind BGSU in student life . I guess this is why more of our students stick around, huh?
- That score makes yet another appearance, but this time it’s to put UT below BG at 5-27 in rankings for best location .
- Statistically speaking, BGSU is a wildly safer place to go to school than the University of Toledo. Because yes, Toledo is ranked above BGSU in a few things, one of them being for youth sex-trade in the U.S. (Obviously, this is no laughing matter. Stay safe, Rockets!)
- Here’s a few fun (and interesting) facts about the history of our two beloved schools. BGSU’s seal was created in 1914. Toledo’s wasn’t put in until 1995. They both have the same legend that your interaction with the seal can cause you to pass or fail your next exam, but our seal was created 81 years earlier. Coincidence?
- Freddie Falcon first flapped his wings in 1950, and Frieda followed in 1966… The same year Rocky came into play. (Upon searching their website, their second mascot, Rocksy's history is not even shared). Our mascots, and the idea to have a male and female mascot came first. Coincidence?
- SicSic has been BGSU’s spirit crew since1946. When did “The Blew Crew ” come to life, you ask? 2000. Another crazy coincidence? I don’t think so.
- We have Falcon Flames, (couples who met at BGSU and proceeded to get married.) This is, currently, native to BGSU… But with all of the other things UT has stolen from us, don’t be surprised when Rocket Romances start becoming a thing.
- We have Pollyeyes. I don’t need to say anymore.
- As far as I can tell from research, Toledo has not gotten any new buildings or renovations on their campus for years. Over here, we are loving our newly renovated rec center and our Greek students are thrilled to enjoy their brand new Sorority and Fraternity houses next year.
- Nick Saban, ranked the #2 best college football coach by Fox Sports used to coach the Toledo Rockets. But, you guessed it. Urban Meyer, (head coach of OSU, the national football champions and former BGSU head coach) took spot number one. So close, but so far away!
- Our record in the Battle of I-75 is currently 39-36-4. It’s close, but we are on top. As we always have been, and as we always will be.
UT students, maybe you want to reconsider your choice. BG students, go throw down some stuffed breadsticks, get some pictures with Freddie and Frieda and be eternally grateful that the events of your life didn’t result in you attending the University of Toledo!
