The old Forrest-Creason golf course on BGSU campus has not been used for golf in over two years. If you have never been to the old course, it is around 2 acres of partially kept grass scape with some bridges and a large pond. This area is the perfect place for picnics, hikes, outdoor activities, and even has a big hill for sledding during the winter. This area already has a parking area on Poe Road, however, it is blocked off since the land is not officially in use. The transformation of this area into a public green space would be beneficial to the university, students, and the town of Bowling Green.
By putting in trails and attempting to restore some the native species, BGSU would be showing they care for their local wildlife as well as the mental health of their students. The partial restoration of the area would lead to a healthier environment. The trails would allow students to enjoy hiking through nature without leaving campus. This gives students a place to escape the hustle of the student lifestyle, allowing them to be more mentally prepared for their classes. Different programs such as the environmental department could create projects within the greenspace.
If you would like to see the old Forest-Creason Golf Course turned into a greenspace, you can help this initiative by reaching out to Environmental Action Group. EAG is a BGSU student ran organization that focuses on creating a more environmental friendly community within Bowling Green and surrounding areas. The organization has been focused on changing the golf course since fall 2019, but also work on other projects around campus. You can reach out on facebook or instagram.
