Beyoncè made her return to the stage at Coachella this past weekend and it was nothing short of amazing. It was so incredible that people have renamed Coachella to BeyChella in her honor. Beyoncè's performance was the most live-streamed performance at Coachella and paid tribute to HBCU's (Historical Black Colleges and Universities) across the country. Here's what I thought about her performance and why it was important not only for black culture but for everyone to witness.
If you were like many people around the world, you witnessed Beyoncè's performance via YouTube. During the entire performance she is backed by a plethora of people who consist of her dancers, band, and back-up singers. The level of production and staging that went into this performance was on another level. On top of that, she performed songs from her most recent visual album as well as her older hits. The performance was full of non-stop surprises.
While we're on the subject of surprises, there was a Destiny's Child reunion (DC3) during the performance as well. I, along with many other people grew up listening to Destiny's Child were incredibly excited for this. They performed their hit singles such as "Soldier", "Lose My Breath", and "Say My Name". Also, another surprise was having Les Twins return to the stage with her during this performance. They were previously dancing alongside her on "The Mrs Carter Show: World Tour".
This performance was so necessary for a number of reasons. First, almost all of her dancers, band, and back-up singers were black. Oftentimes, there is not a lot of representation in the music industry and for her to have so many black people alongside her on stage was nothing short of amazing. Also, speaking of her back-up dancers, she included three fat black women dancing behind her. Again, this allowed for more representation where there isn't much around.
Overall, Beyoncè really outdid herself with this performance. I not only felt represented as a black woman seeing her perform on stage, but her performance taught me the power of believing in my vision and seeing it through no matter what anyone says as well as everything that is for me is attainable. Beyoncè's performance was very much needed for many reasons beyond what I've stated. What was your favorite part of BeyChella?
