We are lucky enough to live in a world with endless genres of music, therefore, many people have different taste and many people may even discredit some artists simply because they are not fans of their music. One for example is, Beyoncé. Many people may not be huge fans of mainstream music and I can understand why - there is nothing worse than a song that gets repeated every 10 seconds. But, when people describe Beyoncé as "mediocre" or "overrated" it angers me for the only reason being that it is simply not true.
Beyoncé is an empire, her very own name is a business. She's an incredibly talented singer and dancer, she's a mother, she's a producer, a songwriter. What exactly makes her overrated? There is not much that this woman CAN'T do, she is easily the most influential and important artist and performer of this generation. Disliking her music is one thing, but denying her superiority in the music industry is not a successful argument. She worked hard for everything she has, she deserves every last bit of respect and appreciation for being a captivating, extremely talented and influential artist. Did I mention that she has some of the best selling singles of all time? Crazy in Love, Single Ladies, Irreplaceable, and Halo, are some of her most popular and well known singles, that being for now. Almost anyone can recognize a Beyoncé on the radio and know the words without even being a fan of hers.
Did we forget December of 2013, when Beyoncé dropped a full visual album on iTunes with zero promotion or announcements? Of course we didn't. The release of this album completely shook the world, breaking the iTunes store and setting true Bey stans out of their minds. Not only did Beyoncé successfully release an album with no promo, but she broke records with it. Bey's self titled album placed number one, making it her fifth studio album to reach number one and shake the music industry. This made Beyoncé the first woman in history to have five studio albums reach number one on the charts, incredible. Still a mediocre artist?
What about April 2016, when Beyoncé released one of her most badass and personal albums, Lemonade. The album also included an hour long movie to correlate with the album. Lets take a wild guess where Beyoncé's Lemonade landed on the charts, number one, making it her SIXTH studio album to grace the charts, creating more history. This iconic album and movie stood for everything important, the Black Lives Matter movement, and a song by song process where we learned about her relationship with her husband (and him cheating on her). As we learn from the album, Jay and Bey are working on things and seem happy as ever together now. Despite that, this was another Beyoncé album that left the world completely shook.
It is okay to dislike a type of music or an artist's specific sound or genre, but never discredit an artist for that reason. Beyoncé is far from overrated, she will never be mediocre, and she will run the music industry even when she's no longer part of it.
