Wednesday nights on ABC is the best night on television. There's "Black-ish" and "Modern Family," but most importantly the "1980s something" comedy, "The Goldbergs." I am not exaggerating when I say this is literally the best show on television. It just is. Fight me. The show first aired when I was in middle school, and I was hooked. Since the beginning, I noticed more than a few parallels between the show and my life.
What makes the show so amazing isn't just the truth that the show holds or how each episode has a heartfelt ending with a great song from the '80s, but the similarities I notice in my life. I could go into great depth about how I can find details that are somehow relatable to my insane family. But for now, I am just going to bring up the crazy and wonderful Beverly Goldberg. It is kind of unbelievable to think that Beverly was a real woman, but she is.
I feel like I know her, probably because I do know her (but her name isn't Beverly, it's Kathy).
Beverlys get stuff done. She demands the best teachers for her children, makes the best home cooked meals, makes sure her family has the best table in a restaurant and knows every little thing about her family. She knows how to save the day. When a dress is ruined or a dream is crushed, she knows how to build her children up.
Growing up with moms like Beverly Goldberg are blessings in disguise. At the time, we might find her ways difficult. However, everything she does is for the good of her children. Since the day her first child is born, she puts her child's needs before her own. Being selfless and never selfish, except for bragging about her kids.
The kids that have Beverlys in their lives will actually succeed in life because of her. As a child, we sometimes forget to praise the Beverlys in our lives because we are so focused on ourselves that we don't realize everything they do is trying to make our lives easier. As embarrassing as it was at the time, going to our schools and fighting for "demands of excellence" (AKA making sure we had the best teachers) was something I never really appreciated until now. And having my mom was a teacher at my school like Beverly did in the show, was kind of great. I had someone at my school that had faith in me no matter what.
Beverlys make the world go round. They raise their kids to follow their dreams, even if their kids are unsure of what their dreams are, and she has faith in them. My Beverly has faith in me, and I think I need that more than ever right now as I begin a new chapter. Although she might only have her "mom goggles" on most of the time, she can call you out when you are in the wrong and fully support anything you do.
At the end of the day, you have to be grateful for having a Beverly for a mother. I know I am. Without her, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I would be unsure about leaving home. Beverlys prepare their kids to leave the nest and conquer the world. Because as far away they go, they know their Beverly is there for them. At least mine is.
