As January 1st approaches, everyone always discusses one aspect of their lives they’d like to better. Typically these resolutions tend to remain rather basic and forgettable: trying to get yourself into shape, attending church, get involved with something new. But what if each year, you focused on something simple yet important: you. I’m not just talking about one concrete change though, but instead an all around treatment. A resolution to bettering you. This is unique and applicable to every individual. It has no limitations and boundaries, and nothing you can check off the list like you can if you go to the gym or mass. Instead, you must focus on yourself, take care of yourself, and figure out what needs to be done in order to make yourself better. Maybe going to the gym one day will better you, but maybe you need to take a day to stay in bed and read a book too. Your primary mission is to use your next 365 days to reach your best you. This can include, but is not limited to:
- Taking a warm bath at night after a stressful day of work/school.
- Making yourself a healthy and energizing meal.
- Saying a prayer for yourself or someone in need.
- Treating yourself – to a spa day, ice cream, a morning to sleep in.
- Going to church, not because you have to but because you want to.
- Helping someone and anyone.
- Smile and laugh a little more frequently.
- Splurge on a new pair of shoes you can’t stop thinking about.
- Do something spontaneous – go out of your comfort zone.
- Take a trip, experience the world.
- Talk to someone you normally wouldn’t- you can learn a lot from others.
- Go for a run or a walk when you have a lot on your mind. Exercise is the best therapy.
- Get in contact with an old friend.
- Form and cherish the relationships with the people around you.
- Realize to never take time for granted.
- Discover a new passion or hobby – or continue an old one.
- Be positive when something negative occurs.
These things don’t have to be big. But one small action or thought a day can make a dramatic difference in how you live your life. While most people forget about their resolutions within the first month, you need to remember these words every day and remind yourself every morning and night to continue to strive for this this upcoming new year. A better you. In the end, you won’t be disappointed.
