"Education is the single most important civil rights issue that we face today"
Michelle Obama said this important quote about education should be equal to everyone. Not every person had the same rights in schools like African Americans; however, another important minority people with disabilities has not always had it easy either.
Parents that had children with disabilities in the 1970s started fighting for their children to have the same rights as other children that went to public school. The law that passed in 1975 was called Education for All Handicapped Children Act, which told every public school that you have to treat them like any other child. The next law was to modified the Education for All Handicapped Children Act and this law is still around. The law called IDEA which stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This came about after George Bush signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act because it states in the law that schools cannot deny a child with a disability a right to their education.
However, these laws have been place to help these children who need it. The nominee that Trump provides us with for the education cabinet scares me. Besty Devos has no right that the state decides if they provide children with disabilities with the money. Devos does not understand how it works and how much a child with a disability needs that funding.
When Senate Maggie Hassan said, "Individual with Disabilities Education Act is a federal civil right law, so do you stand by your statement a few minutes ago it should be up to the states to follow."
DeVos answer with this, "The law.. federal law must be follow where federal dollars are in play."
Hassan reply to that was, "So were you unaware what I just asked you about IDEA that is was a federal law?"
Devos answer with this gem of a explanation about the IDEA law, "I may have confused it."
To be honest, I do not buy what she said and I do not think any other person should stand by her if she becomes head of the education program for the next four years.
She does not get what it is like to have a child with a disability and she wants to put this in the hands of the state. I am going to be honest, I think that most of the states would stay with the federal law; however, we do not know what other states would do.
I am becoming a teacher during this time. I am scared for the children of our nation. I am scared to be a parent when or if she becomes the cabinet leader for education. I want my children to do well in school because all children in the United States of America deserve getting the same amount of funding.
