On November 10, 2015, Bethesda released "Fallout 4", a long waited addition to the Fallout series, and a game with profits that exceeded $750,000,000 within 24 hours of the game being launched.
In the beginning, I, along with many others, greatly anticipated and wished for another "Fallout" game since 2008, since, let us be completely honest, "Fallout: New Vegas" should have been labeled "Fallout 3 and a Half". To us, the initial announcement for "Fallout 4" seemed unreal. We questioned it, doubted it, but finally came to the realization that this was really happening, and it caused quite a ruckus.
The game, like the others before it, takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, in an alternate time-line of earth where the Cold War basically never ended, technology never surpassed that of what was found in the 1950's even up to the last years before the "Great War" took place, and nuclear fusion, as well as others, were the main sources for energy. What I found most appealing about the game, however, is where it takes place: Boston, Massachusetts and the surrounding areas.
Now, to be a little more relevant to the title of this article, "Fallout 4" was anything but a let down. However, what Bethesda ended up doing honestly felt like the ultimate betrayal, in my opinion.
Bethesda originally announced that there would be DLC. for "Fallout 4", and that there would be plenty of it, which players could buy individually, or be included for free with the purchase of the Season Pass. The Season Pass, originally $29.99, was then raised to $49.99 after the release of the initial three add-ons, "Automatron", "Wasteland Workshop", and "Far Harbor", to account for the costs of the future add-ons. What is really dishonest is that this price increase seemed to point towards a multitude of add-ons that have yet to be announced, and seemed to promise that there would always be something new and fun in the "Wasteland of the Commonwealth". Though, these hopes were quickly dashed with the announcement for the final add-on, known as "Nuka-World", in a tweet by Bethesda's marketing executive Pete Hines which only stated "last one".
It infuriates me. the fact that you promise us with many more add-ons and even raising the price of the season pass by $20 to supposedly cover those costs, and then just tweeting this is just unbelievable. I have seen articles talking about how the anger and furry are just exaggerated. Well, I can honestly say that Bethesda just gave up, and in the shadiest way possible. You give us this fantastic game, which I have a hard time pulling myself away from to begin with, and then you offer us these add-ons, some which were a little dismal, and then you say "oh that's it, no more"?
Bethesda, you could have done so much more. You could have released a DLC which let us explore Cape Cod. You could have given us a DLC which let us divulge into more of what Massachusetts has to offer. You could have given us the chance to go to other states, like Vermont, Rhode Island or New Hampshire. Yet, you end with a flat note by giving us this "Nuka-World" expansion.
To be fair, there is also going to be a virtual reality release for the HTC Vive in 2017, which will enable VR capabilities for "Fallout 4". With that in mind, I expected more from Bethesda. Though, I'm still happy with the fact that "Fallout 4" exists, and that I have graciously wasted a multitude of hours progressing on it.
