If you're shying away from Zoom but feel Skype is too old-school, don't worry, you still have options! These programs and apps can connect you to the important things through your computer or phone. Try your luck at one of these programs next time you have a video call date or some virtual tea to spill!
Google Hangouts
Some like to say Google Hangouts is on the decline, however it's still a great messaging feature especially because you can have so many different chats, single or groups, in one place whether on you phone, tablet, or browser. There's a Google Chrome extension for it, as well, that I've found helpful. I also think it's cute to be able to see if someone is using Hangouts on their phone or laptop or are currently viewing the chat with the small icons that pop up on the bottom. It's easy to send links and files, especially since it's linked to Gmail and Google Drive. To top it all off, it has a video chat function that's always my go-to on both the phone and desktop. I rarely have issues and don't see much difference in quality between it and other video call programs I've used. Google Hangouts is a must-try for it's ease of use and uncluttered layout. Give it a go for your next groupchat or call!
Discord
Discord isn't just for gamers or niche communities; it can also be a great way to organize business groups that need different channels or friends who like to load up group chats with lots of chatter and memes. I've been apart of large group video and audio call meetings on Discord and felt the layout for handling it, even on a small phone screen, is smart. I especially love the light that indicates which person is speaking. It's a lifesaver in large groups! When it comes to organizing text group chats, too, it's definitely top-notch. You're able to add channels, which are different group chats within the group, labeled to your liking. I've seen many groups stay organized through multiple themed chat rooms such as a meme corner, a general chatter section, or a FAQ. Discord provides a lot of customization when it comes to channels and the designers definitely have a sense of humor between some of the automated wording and the fun bots available to add to chats. Don't skip over Discord as an option for your next event!
It'll be worth a try to step away from the mainstream video call platforms to find what works best for you. Google Hangouts is easy to use and I highly recommend it for video calls and group chats that seamlessly connect between computer and phone. Organization never looked as good as it does through Discord and the customization is hard to pass up! I hope your next meeting or chill time only gets better with these great programs.
