Recently, I was evaluating my pet peeves, and I realized that among my many political pet peeves (which you likely have read about extensively if you follow my blogs) there is one that is much less practical. However, that one pet peeve still sits very heavily upon my heart. So here it is: the popularity of the Disney movie Frozen makes me crazy. Yes, that's right. My pet peeve is about a Disney princess movie. I've tried explaining why I don't like Elsa and Anna, but often to no avail because I can't think of a good way of explaining it. I think the best way for me to explain is to rank the Disney princesses, and maybe that will be an explanation in and of itself. So, here is a ranking of the Disney princesses, from worst to best.
11. Aurora
Elsa and Anna are not actually my least favorite. It's Aurora. She's a really boring princess, honestly. She doesn't really do anything other than meet a guy in the woods (this is a common theme for Disney) and then falls asleep to later be awoken by him. So, because she spends most of the movie sleeping and not doing anything, she has to be last.
10. Elsa and Anna
I lump these two in together because they really feed into each other's antics, which causes them to be the way they are. A lot of people argue that they are super feminist princesses because their love for each other saves the day. That's fine and all, but let's look at why the day needs saved: Anna decides to marry a guy she's just met (which, granted, many Disney princesses do) and Elsa gets mad and turns everything into a wintry nightmare. So, yes, they do love each other as sisters. But they are also the source of their own problems.
9. Snow White
Snow White doesn't really do anything other than run away from the evil queen and then get tricked by the evil queen anyway. I'm honestly still not sure how the prince even knew about her, but basically the point of the story is that she ends up living happily ever after with her true love. But, I will give it to her that she's only 14 years old, so there's probably not much she's capable of doing just because of her age. So while it isn't her fault exactly, she's just not that inspiring.
8. Cinderella
Cinderella starts to get into the territory of not doing much of anything other than falling in love. She gets pushed around a lot by her stepmother and stepsisters, who, to the best of my knowledge, shouldn't have any coercive power over her. Although I have to give her credit for defying them (eventually) and going to the ball.
7. Ariel
Full disclosure: Ariel was my favorite princess as a kid. But looking back on it, she's all of 16 years old and thinks she knows everything. She really thinks she loves a guy who she's seen one time (while he was unconscious no less). Thus, she leaves her family, trades her voice to a sea witch, and gets completely fooled by said sea witch in the process. Foolish. That being said, she does have a commendable curiosity about the world and an overall good heart, so I'll give her a little bit of slack. A little bit.
6. Rapunzel
Rapunzel is pretty naive, I'll be honest. She wants to see the world more than anything, and she has all the tools to do it, but she just doesn't because her "mom" told her not to. While I think it is admirable that she's able to reform Flynn, she doesn't have the smarts or the capability that some of the other princesses have.
5. Jasmine
Jasmine doesn't really accomplish too much, but I rank her this highly because her personality says she definitely could have accomplished something big. She's feisty, doesn't want to settle for anything less than the best husband-wise, and has a kind heart. I think the only reason she doesn't do something hugely awesome is because the main character is Aladdin, so the plot only makes sense if he's the hero. On the other hand, she does deceive Jafar, so that's a pretty good testament to her capabilities.
4. Pocahontas
There's been some debate over whether or not she's an actual princess, but for this purpose let's say she is. I have some major respect for Pocahontas for a couple reasons. First, one of her messages to the children is to respect nature, which is pretty darn wholesome. Second, she sticks up for what she believes in against her fellow tribesmen- emphasis on the "men," because Native American tribes were definitely all about the men. So, I give her major props for asserting herself.
3. Belle
I've heard some arguments that Belle is a bad role model for kids, and I've thought about it and can't find any way to agree with that. Belle is super smart, for one; her favorite thing about a magical castle is the huge library. Second, the whole story is about Belle saving her father and changing the Beast into a kind-hearted human. Ultimately, you have to respect her intentions, and the fact that she doesn't take any criticism for her bookish ways.
2. Tiana
Tiana's dream in life is to open her own restaurant, which is really cool to me. While most of the princesses are out here preaching about the value of a true love's kiss, Tiana tells you (and little girls everywhere) the truth: you don't get anything without working for it. That message alone is enough to put Tiana toward the top of the list, not to mention the fact that she has a voice to rival that of any soul singer.
1. Mulan
Mulan is by far the best Disney princesses. When you compare everything that Mulan accomplished to what the other princesses accomplished, it's a no-brainer. While most Disney plot-lines center on the princess falling in love with a handsome prince (or other eligible bachelor), this one doesn't. Instead, it's about how Mulan saves China almost single-handedly. She even earns honors from the emperor. I don't think this one is debatable.
So, there it is. Just a quick nota bene: if there are princesses who aren't on this list (I realize Merida and Moana are not, and there may be some others) it's because I haven't seen the movie. If you have any differing opinions, leave them in the comments!
