Having the motivation to workout can be impossible. We all find excuses, whether it be the fact that you have no time or that it does't fit in with your work schedule. But living in D.C., the working out is a culture and a lifestyle. I've went around all the top fitness studios in D.C., so you don't have to and hears what I found.
5. PureBarre
Pure Barre is a great toning workout. For someone who likes HIIT workouts rather than slow-paced ones, I had a great time. It is a small carpeted studio and basically all girls. This workout is definitely if you are looking to get toned, not to lose weight. In all barre classes, lots of sweating isn't likely. But don't let that fool you into making you thing that you won't wake up sore the next day. You do.
Sweat Scale: 2
4. Elevate Fitness
Elevate is a strength combined with cardio based workout class. The cardio comes from treadmills and rowing machines and the strength comes from sand bags, TRX bands, and weights. For someone who wasn't into running, I enjoyed this workout. The one thing about it is that I cannot run straight for 30 minutes. That is what we had to do. Unlike Blast, which I will talk about later, this is running for 30 minutes and then strength training for 30 minutes. It was a fun experience, and great if you want to lose weight, but it definitely wasn't my favorite way to sweat.
3. SoulCycle
Ah. No workout article is complete without mentioning SoulCycle. Is it worth the hype? Honestly, yes. SoulCycle, for me, was an out of this world experience. You sweat, you dance, you feel more positive than ever. you dance to the music and you just have the best time of your life. I would join in a heartbeat, but this amazing workout comes with a really hefty price tag. For 30 something dollars a class, I think its quite a strain on the wallet. You can sweat the same amount for less money.
2. Blast
This west-end workout is probably one of my favorite ways to sweat. Like Elevate, the class is split into 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the floor doing strength training. However, the best part about Blast is that you are not on the treadmill for 30 minutes with no break. For example, you transition every 5, 7 or 10 minutes from the treadmill to the floor, depending on the day. It is such a positive environment and I walk out of every class feeling accomplished and ready to go about my day.
1. Urban Boxing
Also located in West End, Urban boxing makes you feel like the strongest person in the world. When you walk in, you feel like you're in the boxing championships. At least that's what I felt like even when I took the basic kick-boxing class. I got my hands wrapped by professional boxers and boy did I feel like a boss. By the end of the hour, I had sweat on the boxing bags, the floor and literally everywhere around me. I would join Urban Boxing in a heartbeat, but once again, many dollars would be spent. I do think it is worth it though. It is the perfect combination of cardio and strength, you feel like a badass, and bonus: you know how to fight someone.
