Where do I start?

One of the most daunting question about getting into comic books for any new reader is, "Where in God's green and polluted earth do I start?!" It is still a question I ask myself, having only gotten deep into comics only months ago. Comic books have been around for nearly decades now. That's tons of history and continuity to catch up on and soak in. Countless stories, relationships, events, and crisis to read up on. It was even hard for me when I started. "Which comic should I start at? Should I read Batman #1 of 2016 or of 1989? Which story arc is necessary and which isn't?" "What in the world is an ElseWorlds comic?" All these questions make it such a daunting task to start anywhere. Looking at it from such a larger scope when Action Comics is at 957 and Detective Comics is at 930, it can be pretty intimidating. But would you tell a person not to read the Harry Potter series even though it happened years ago and there are 8 books? How about The Hunger Games? Twilight? Even Sherlock Holmes? Even though some of these series should Be read in order, these novels are timeless, as are the stories that exist between the panels of comic books. A story of the 80's can still has the emotional punch if you were to read it in 2016. So how do you get into comic books? The best way to jump into comic books is quite literally, to jump in. These stores aren't going anywhere and are readily available to you. You may not be up to date on batman during the "New 52" but that doesn't mean you can't go back and read it, and still feel the emotion behind the writing, just like fans did back when it released in 2011. Even though Doomsday fought Superman years before I was born, that doesn't mean I can't still feel emotional after the last pages flip. So if your reservations for getting into comics is not knowing where to start, my answer is simple, pick a spot and start there.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
