1. The weather. Everyone always talks of how amazing the weather in the South is, and although, like anywhere, it rains, and gets cloudy, it is practically unbeatable. We only have about a month of “cold,” and for a born New Englander, it barely even counts. The rest of the months are blue skies and endless sun, and yes, it is fun to brag about to your family and friends at home.
2. The fast food. As anyone who has been down South knows, they have some amazing fast food choices. Chick-fil-A, Cookout, Biscuitville, Bojangles, Steak and Shake, the list goes on and on. They know how to do food.
3. Sweet tea. It really can be found everywhere, and it is as good as local Southerners have always said.
4. Change of scenery. Of course this point only counts if you have not always lived in the South, but what better time than college to live in a place you have never experienced before?
5. Southern attitude. This common stereotype related to the South, is one of the most accurate that I have hear. People here are all incredibly kind, and considerate. I am called “sweetie, doll, or hun” on a daily basis and honestly, it makes my day every time.
6. Snow days. This could be in the same category as the weather, however it is special enough to be alone. If you are from New England, you are used to needing a foot or more of snow in order to have a snow day. Not in the South. An inch or two can shut an entire town down for at least a few days.
7. The biscuits. Obviously you can get a biscuit in a lot of places throughout the US, but NOTHING compares to a real southern biscuit.
8. Tailgates. Need I say more?
9. Greek life. Although tons of other colleges have sororities and fraternities, they are taken very seriously down here and it makes the experience that much better. Get ready to see monogrammed everything, Lilly Pulitzer overload and Greek letters everywhere. And get ready to love it.
10. The campuses. Southern schools have some of the most beautiful college campuses I have ever seen. With all of the fountains, the ever green grass, and the gorgeous brick, historic buildings, this alone could make anyone choose a Southern school.
