The 12 Best Things About December

There are so many reasons why December is great. The weather gets colder and it becomes acceptable to sit around in footie pajamas and a Snuggie all day. There is no need to try and go to the gym during December because you'll most likely gain it all back by eating your weight in holiday sweets.

Plus, you'll be hiding that body under leggings and a giant sweater anyway. While there are so many things that come to mind when thinking about the 12th month of the year, there are certain things that make December the best.

1. December 25th

"It's the most wonderful time of the year." For those who celebrate Christmas, the whole month of December is spent listening to Christmas music, buying gifts and decorating the tree. So many things come with the Christmas season such as all of the best deals in the stores, warm fires, and family get-togethers. For those who are Christians, Christmas is spent not just giving and receiving gifts, but celebrating the birth of Jesus.

2. Tacky Christmas Sweaters

Who doesn't like a good tacky Christmas sweater? During the Christmas season, the stores put out their Christmas attire. One of the big hits of the holiday season are the tacky Christmas sweaters.

Many people attend tacky Christmas sweater parties. Many of these sweaters have to do with pop culture such as the "Hotline Bling" Drake Christmas sweaters that have come out recently. Others have movie references such as the "Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animal" sweaters.

3. Hot Chocolate

A fuzzy blanket, a warm fire and a steaming mug of hot chocolate is the perfect way to spend a cold December night. There is regular hot chocolate, white hot chocolate, and peppermint hot chocolate. You can even add alcohol to your hot chocolate. This is one of the best ways keep warm up this holiday season.

4. ABC Family's "25 Days of Christmas"

Who wouldn't want the opportunity to watch "Elf" 12 times in the month of December? The ABC Family's 25 Days of Christmas lineup is the best way to see all of the Christmas movies this holiday season. Every day, from the 1st to the 25th, Christmas movies are shown from 12 a.m. until 2 a.m. the next day.

5. Disney Christmas Parade

The parade from "The Happiest Place on Earth" on the best day of the year. Watching the magical Disney Christmas parade is a tradition in many families. This parade includes famous singers, Disney characters and even Santa.

6. Break from School

In high school and college, this break comes after the dreaded finals week. This break from school is much needed for students to have a get-away from the stress that comes with classes, tests and homework. For elementary, middle and high school students this break typically lasts two weeks. This break lasts around a month for college students.

7. Christmas Cookies

Like it was mentioned earlier, you'll most likely be eating tons of sweets this holiday season from pies to cakes and cookies. Making and decorating Christmas cookies is a tradition in many households. There are many different Christmas cookies you can make such as Santa, snowmen and Christmas trees.

8. Ice Skating

Even though you may fall on your face multiple times, you're still going to have fun at the ice skating rink. Sure you can go to an indoor ice skating rink any day of the year, but nothing says "December" like an outdoor ice skating rink in places such as Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta and Rockefeller Center in New York City.

9. Christmas Lights

One fun thing to do during the holiday season is to go explore Christmas lights. Every year people decorate their house with tons of lights and wreaths. Some places even put on a giant light display such as the Botanical Gardens in Atlanta. Sometimes, people set their lights to music do make a magical lights display.

10. Gifts (giving and receiving)

Receiving gifts is a big thing during the holiday season. Not only is receiving gifts one of the most exciting times of the holiday season but so is giving gifts. During December, the stores are full of people trying to find the perfect gifts to give to their friends and family. Seeing the look on someone's face when they open up your gift is one of the best feelings.

11. Starbucks Holiday Drinks

Even with the Red Cup Controversy, people still got excited about the release of Starbucks Holiday drinks. This year Starbucks is offering the usual Chestnut Praline Latte, Peppermint Mocha, and Caramel Brulée Latte as well as the new Holiday Spice Flat White drink.

12. New Year's Eve

One of the best parts about the last month is that it includes the 365th day of the year. Coming up with New Year's resolutions, toasting glasses of champagne, and ringing in the New Year with your closest friends and family. What can be better than that?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you.
