This summer I made the decision to complete an internship for school away from home. It was a blast and I got to learn and experience a whole new world practically. I also got to stay with some great people who interned at the same workplace I did. We had such a fun summer and I learned a few things from them as well.
1. It ok to have fun -- even when the work is overwhelming
GiphyI struggled a bit living away from home at first. It seemed almost impossible to balance work with going out and having fun. To be honest, I've never been too good with time management so, sometimes I try to do too much and end up overwhelming myself. However, the other interns were great because they taught me to loosen up and let go a bit. We did so many road trips on off days, went to movies, hung out at the beach and the bars, etc. I made so many memories that I'll cherish forever thanks to them! So, seize the day and live for adventure!
2. Don’t be a slack ass - (A.K.A don’t coast by doing the bare minimum)
My pupper sleeping and not barking, for once.
One of my roommates taught me that you really shouldn't half ass anything. It doesn't matter whether you're tired or just feel like being lazy. If you're going to do something might as well do it right the first time. Otherwise, you'll just have to do it all over again until it is right. I say this because every time I got or felt a little slack or lazy they practically life coached me into doing the job right. Trust me, if I could laze around or sleep all day like my puppy does I'd be set but we all know that doesn't work in this world of reality.
3. How to budget better and save some moneys
I'm really horrible at budgeting. Let's just say that I enjoy retail therapy a bit too much. I'm always struggling with cash or buying things I may not need ever, but want anyway. It's quite the predicament. However, this summer I was life coached (we used this term and method a lot this summer) into budgeting better. They gave me a new perspective and showed me when it's ok to spend money and when it's better to stay in and cook at home. Not eating out as much really saved a ton of money.
4. It’s all about confidence
GiphyWorking in an industry such as the ours, it can be difficult to be confident starting out. Sometimes we make mistakes and our confidence decreases. But it's ok, we learn from those mistakes and that's what helps us to improve. My roommates taught me not to overthink everything and to let go. Because of that, I thank them because now I'm not only comfortable with working in this industry. I comfortable and confident with myself as well.
This summer was the opportunity of a lifetime and I am so grateful that I had the chance to meet such wonderful people. My roommates got me out of comfort zone and showed me how to be courageous and live for today. Although we may have been awful to each other sometimes because we were always together, we still learned from one another and made endless memories. I can't wait to see what adventures we all decide to take on next! If you EVER get the opportunity to do an internship away from home with housing provided, do it! It will change your life!
