As a college student here in Lexington, KY, you’ll learn very quickly that there’s more to do than just cheering on the cats. And eating is one of them. One of the best things about Lexington is the food selection. Yes, we eat more than just Kentucky Fried Chicken.

From Asian cuisine to Mexican cuisine — and everything in between — there’s a restaurant to satisfy all of your cravings. Your parents will quickly learn that eating out is one of the main contributors to your maxed out credit card or overdrawn statements.

You see, eating out isn’t just an activity in your day, it’s a way of socializing.

“Hey wanna grab lunch this week?”

“Let’s go try that new breakfast place!”

“Let’s catch up over dinner!”

So we’re really just engaging in fun and safe social activities, as well as nourishing our bodies. See mom and dad, we could be doing much worse things.

Here are 10 Lexington restaurants that every UK student should try, without breaking the bank:

1. Josie’s Restaurant

Although they may be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner- this is one of the best (if not the best) breakfast places in Lex. Whether in you’re in the mood for a fluffy stack or some eggs and bacon- they’ve got it all.

2. Dad’s Favorites

Dad’s Favorites is one of the best delis in the area, known for their fresh sandwiches and cheese spreads. This is definitely a step up from your usual Jimmy John’s delivery to the library.

3. Joella’s Hot Chicken

Another great lunch or dinner spot, known for their hot chicken. This is a new take on your typical Kentucky Fried Chicken. They may be known for their hot chicken, but their menu includes everything from chicken to tofu to a kale salad- which is fab if I might add. Their mac n cheese is also to die for.

4. Blue Sushi Sake Grill

Located in newly opened Summit at Fritz Farm, this is my top recommendation for sushi and Asian cuisine. They even offer Happy Hour specials Monday- Saturday 3-6:30 p.m. and Sunday noon-8 p.m. with discounted drinks, appetizers, and rolls.

Always like my sushi with a side of savings!!!

5. Babalu Tapas and Tacos

Also located in the Summit, Babalu is known for their tapas and tacos. From ahi tuna tacos to pan-seared crab cakes, you won’t be disappointed. Great for birthday dinners or date nights, and the margs are a must.

6. Local Taco

Another restaurant known for their tacos, practically on campus. Local Taco is a staple in every UK student’s diet. I could drink the queso and crave their spicy shrimp tacos weekly.

7. The Press Juice and Health Bar

Because we need some sort of detox after all of those tacos and queso. Luckily, we can detox with smoothie bowls covered with chocolate chips and peanut butter.

Known for their juices, smoothies and smoothie bowls- The Press is one of the best healthy breakfast and lunch places around. Their menu even includes salads, coconut wraps, grain bowls and other gluten-free baked goods.

8. Drake’s Lexington

If you’re looking for a fun sports bar and a quality restaurant in one — here’s your place. With locations spreading across Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, and Alabama- Drake’s is known for its fun atmosphere as well as delicious food. From fried pickles to sushi, Drake’s has something for everyone. And it’s affordable.

9. Pasta Garage Italian Cafe

Designed to serve fast, on-the-go, gourmet Italian food- Pasta Garage is your go-to for all things pasta. With delicious classics such as fettuccine alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmesan or custom build-your-own options- there’s no better way to carbo load!

10. Great Bagel

Another staple in every UK student’s diet. I don’t think you can even call yourself a true UK student without trying Great Bagel.

One of the best and freshest bagels in town. Whether on a sandwich with egg, cheese, and sausage or smothered in cream cheese, there’s no wrong way to do it.

Happy eating y'all.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
