7 of my favorite places to sit down and write

Starbucks isn't just for drinking, and the library isn't just for reading.

7 of my favorite places to sit down and write

I always struggled doing homework at home because there were always constant distractions, whether it's one of my pets, or a parent walking in, or my sudden urge to watch T.V...

1. Starbucks

It's not a secret that coffee shops are some of the best places to write, which is why I made it number one on this list. Maybe its just me, but I love the smell of coffee and slowly sipping on a cup as ideas come to mind for my next Odyssey article or homework. It also helps that when I need a small break, I can people watch instead of putting on a T.V. show that I'll mindlessly watch for much longer than I planned.

2. Public park

Sitting on a bench in a public park when it's nice out is one of the best ways to get some fresh air, and have a decent spot for writing. Of course, it can get overwhelming when the weather isn't perfect, or if there are far too many kids running around you. So, sometimes it won't be a good place to write in but it can be once you find your perfect spot and time there.

3. Porch/deck

Now, this spot I enjoy quite a bit because nobody ever really bothers me when I'm on my deck or porch. I can watch people walk by, put my dog on the chain, and sit back in a chair or on a blanket and enjoy the weather while knowing I won't be disturbed, and that my door is only a few feet away if I decide that I need something.

4. Library

The library is obviously a good place because it's quite, there is usually free WiFi, and its made for reading and working on homework. I typically don't go to the library to write because it feels too quiet for me, but I know a lot of people who really enjoy the atmosphere.

5. Panera

I just really love their food. If I'm hungry, I'll take my laptop to Panera and order something to eat while I work on homework or an article. It has a nice vibe, and it isn't ever really too loud. Plus, free WiFi!

6. College

Hanging out on campus, or writing in the library of ISU is one of my favorite things to do. I've always enjoyed the college atmosphere, I enjoy seeing my friends around and saying hi, and it's big enough that I can find my own place to be alone. The Quad is an amazing place to Hammock as well. You get free WiFi over there!

7. Uptown

Uptown Normal is a beautiful place, and there are a lot of spots where you can find free WiFi. It's also very close to a lot of food spots, coffee shops, and it's a great place to people watch or just hang out while you're taking a small break.

I've always been really picky when it comes to where I write or work on homework. Maybe this will help you out when you're struggling as well.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
