Everyone loves where they are from or at least has an appreciation for their hometown. For my town, even though it has its own negatives, there are actually more positives. Mainly what I love are the people. They really make the town. I have always lived in Western Massachusetts, and could not be any prouder of where I come from. As should everyone, no matter where you are from.
At college, whenever I am asked where I am from, I reply with "Agawam." The same expression covers the person's face every single time. It is confusion. Then I say, it's in Western Mass. I have gotten a mix of responses like, "So Worcester?," "Oh, Hickville," and my favorite, "Where all the farms are!" Even though it feels like I live in a forgotten town, there are great places in Western Mass that are definitely worth the visit.
1. Williamstown.
Right above North Adams is this artsy town called Williamstown. Here, The Clark Art Museum showcases the extraordinary work from French Impressionists. I went here with my French class back in high school, and I honestly loved it there. The art is absolutely breathtaking. Also, you have the opportunity to learn about Impressionism and how it affected society.
2. South Deerfield.
I am sure you have heard of a great candle place called Yankee Candle. Well luckily for myself, and those who live nearby, there is one here! At least once a year, during Christmas time, my family and I make a day trip there, where we take pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Every once in a while, I make the same trip with some friends during the summer time. To watch how the decorations and set ups change throughout the year is fantastic. It can go from everything all red, white and blue, to red and green everywhere, with Christmas trees at every turn. Yankee Candle does not disappoint when it comes to the decoration department.
3. Northampton.
Ever want to live in a college town? Well here is your chance! This town is well known as a college town, and being covered in shops and restaurants. One step outside your door and you can be in front of Sylvester's, which is a restaurant that serves great food. I have been there a few times with some friends and I have always left happy. When you order a coffee, you get a big coffee mug that is almost the size of my face. (Now I know you think I am just exaggerating, but it is honestly very big). Personally, there is no restaurant that compares.
4. West Springfield.
You know those times where all you want is to have a bunch of food all in the same area? Guess what? The Big E is your place. In September, it is a huge fair where you get to eat a wide variety of different foods and can ride the Ferris wheel or the other several rides. For those who live near, it can become a tradition to go every year when it comes into town. This event brings businesses from everywhere as well as people from all over the place to enjoy a good time! Back in high school, I would participate in the Agawam Day parade there with the Marching Mohawks, aka my school's marching band that I was involved in color guard. Many townsies come to watch and cheer us on.
5. Agawam.
Six Flags: the one thing my town is known for. The one in my town is Six Flags New England, which even though is not as enormous as Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey is, it holds just as much fun! This is a place where you can just hang out with your friends all day. Every year there is at least one new ride, and honestly, everyone should go on the new Wicked Cyclone. This new ride is the replacement to one of the older rides at the amusement park, called the Cyclone. When you live here long enough you grow to love the older rides, and appreciate the fun times or even maybe the scary times. It is worth the time spent with friends.
