I love the Oscars. Getting together with some friends, eating snack food, and spending a few hours watching your favorite celebrities be celebrated is a simple entertainment in life. With so much going on in the world, it’s nice to take a minute to enjoy some less vital, but truly fun, things. The 2018 Oscars were full of some iconic moments, and here were my favorites.
1. Rita Moreno wearing the same dress she wore when she won her Oscar, over 50 years ago.
Is there anything more iconic than this? Both Rita and Tiffany Haddish re-wore dresses, slowly breaking the negative connotation Hollywood had towards repeat outfits. Plus, it was Rita’s subtle way of reminding everyone that she can still fit into a dress she wore in the 60’s. A true icon.
2. Jordan Peele winning for Get Out.
Get Out was the movie of the year.It had a cultural impact incomparable to the vast majority of movies. After getting snubbed at the Golden Globes, it was beyond incredibly to watch Peele win for Best Original Screenplay, since it was more than well-deserved.
3. Every moment with Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph.
These two need to work on something together stat. A buddy comedy? A variety show? Should they just host the Oscar’s next year? I’m not sure, but for the brief time they appeared on the screen, the lit up the whole event.
4. This moment between Chadwick Boseman and Mark Hamill.
The reassuring and supportive shoulder tap was such a pure moment. I was living for the pride Hamill was conveying.
5. Oscar Isaac’s reaction when he announced that CoCo won for Best Animated film.
Just pure joy. I won’t lie, I truly teared up a little bit seeing how excited he was. Coco winning in general was just a joyful moment.
6. Allison Janney’s win.
Ok, this might be because I’m a bit biased due to a long love of Janney, but she killed her part in I, Tonya. She’s personally one of my favorite actresses, and I was so excited when they read her name out.
7. Frances McDormand’s Speech.
If you saw the Oscars, you know why I loved this speech. If you didn’t, take a few moments from your day and watch it.
The Oscar’s this year had its entertainment factor but combined it with some really powerful and important moments. It reminded us that it’s ok to enjoy things, but that it’s important to remember the issues in life.he Oscar’s have a ways to go as far as representation, diversity, and a rampant gender imbalance, but it’s good to see that the program is slowly working to rectify these issues and give credit to those who truly deserve it.
