I never thought I'd volunteer at an elementary school - I don't want to be a teacher or a counselor so I did not think there was a point in it. However, shortly after I started college I began volunteering at a local elementary school twice a week and now I can't imagine a week without seeing the familiar faces of the kids I've grown to care for. If you're like I was and need a little convincing as to why volunteering with children ages 5 - 11 is worth it, here's a few reasons:
1. It's a stress relief
You can spend two hours away from homework playing with kids and LEGOs.
2. The kids are amazing
They're bundles full of energy, and sometimes they're a little hard to deal with, but I always leave with a smile on my face.
3. It teaches you to be patient
Sometimes I help children with their homework and you have to be really patient with them so that they understand the content you're trying to explain.4. You are never lacking in entertainment
The kids tell jokes, give you nicknames (For example, I'm Daphne from Scooby Doo), and overall you have a great time - their happiness is contagious.
5. You get the joy of making someone happy
Not only do the kids make you happy - you also make them happy. Whether it's at school or in the community the kids you befriend are unfailingly happy to see you. They may even scream your name and hug you.
6. You are needed and appreciated
Some school programs are completely dependent on volunteers so you know these schools truly need and appreciate all the help they receive.
7. Elementary school kids sympathize with you about homework
Everyone dislikes homework and if you mention it to the kids they will understand.
8. They understand bad days
If I'm having a bad day the kids can usually tell. You know those days after you stay up all night studying? Even though I'm not in the best mood the kids realize that everyone has bad days. (They will probably try to cheer you up though.)
9. It teaches you to enjoy the little things
If we all could be as happy as the elementary school children when they have cheese sticks for snack then there would be no conflict in the world.
10. You get to make an impact in a child's life
Some kids don't have great home lives - they don't know love and don't receive it at home. If you become a volunteer at an elementary school, not only do you become a mentor to these kids but you also become a role model, they respect you and look up to you. The more you invest in their lives, the more rewarding the experience, and never take for granted an opportunity to improve the life of a child.
