When choosing a Community College, I didn't realize they had the biggest and most important secret ever. This secret was an honor society that has the power to change your life. Phi Theta Kappa, not to be confused by Phi Beta Kappa, is an international honor society found only in two year colleges.
To be a part of Phi Theta Kappa means you are a true nerd (you hold a 3.5 overall GPA), but that is something to feel honored about. Phi Theta Kappa honors its scholars for what they achieved. Some of the benefits of being apart of Phi Theta Kappa is having access to so many scholarship opportunities. Being an honor student with good grades isn't the only thing Phi Theta Kappa sees and recognizes though.
Phi Theta Kappa is based on four Hallmarks: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. If you've been invited to join Phi Theta Kappa, you have already completed the first hallmark. Getting involved with your colleges chapter will help you with the rest. In my chapter and many of the others around the world, some of the leadership roles we offer is becoming a part of an officer team, and helping out at events we host as well as events hosted by the college.
Being a part of Phi Theta Kappa has changed my life and I can't think them enough. I have leadership positions on the chapter level as well as Regional level in Alabama and it has been a big step. This organization helps to build tomorrows leaders while showing fellowship and serving others.
During a normal school year many chapters do research on and complete Honors in Action and College Projects. Many chapters also do service projects. One of my chapters favorite service projects is to hold a book drive in honor of Dr Seuss' Birthday for our local Children's DHR.
Phi Theta Kappa also gives many students the opportunity to travel! Many chapters travel to Regional events that are within the state, unless a Region is across multiple states. As well as traveling to international events which could mean out of state travel to the annual convention called Catalyst (previously known as NerdNation), and to Honors Institute. This past International Convention was held in Nashville, Tennessee and Honors Institute will be held in Chicago, Illinois. Other previous locations for these events include Orlando, FL, Washington DC, and San Antonio, TX.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is a great advantage for all Community College students to have. If you have a chapter at your school and are invited to join, I encourage you to accept membership. We honor scholars, build servant leaders, and have lively fellowship among scholars.
