A summer indoors is absolutely no summer at all! Get active and get outside with these beautiful hikes that Georgia offers.
1. Sawnee Mountain Preserve/Indian Seats
Four miles round trip
Highlights: Well traveled trail through forest leading to summit. Take your time to sit on large boulders at Indian Seat overlook and enjoy the view of the Blue Ridge Mountain and rural Georgia.
2. Arabia Mountain
1.3 miles top trail
Highlights: This National Heritage has over 30 miles of trails! Granite interspersed with lakes. I got the sense this was a flatter Stone Mountain. Trail marked with stone cairns but great place to explore and get the feeling of being off trail.
3. Kennesaw Mountain
Over 20 miles
Highlights: Combine outdoor adventure with a history lesson. This park is a site of a Civil War battle. Hikes may lead you to cannons, trenches or monuments. Some hikes in the park have views of the Atlanta skyline. Stop by the visitor center for details of this battlefield.
4. Sweetwater Creek State Park
Red Trail: 2 miles long and over 9 miles in park
Highlights: The Red Trail follows the Sweetwater Creeks’ whitewater and leads hikers to the ruins of the New Manchester Mill, which was the production site for Confederate uniforms during the Civil War. Take the Yellow Trail (3.4 miles) to view the mill ruins from across the creek. You will cross the river on an interesting bridge and see an ancient Native American cave on this hike.
Bonus: Scenes from "The Hunger Games" the were filmed at this park!
5. Amicalola Falls State Park
2.1 miles round trip
Highlights: If a waterfall is the reward you are seeking on your hike, this is the trail for you. Amicalola Falls (named by the Cherokee meaning “tumbling waters”) is the tallest waterfall in Georgia.
