There are SO MANY amazing movies to watch this spooky season, and of course, there are some staples. However, there are some movies that still remain unseen or forgotten every October. That is a tragedy I hope to fix. Without further ado, here are 5 movies you HAVE to watch this October.
1. Practical Magic
This movie is a tale of sisterly love, small-town quirkiness, and raising the dead. Essentially, two sisters reunite after a long time apart in a small town where everyone thinks their family is practicing witchcraft. Craziness ensues. There are some funny parts, some sad parts, and lots of quotable moments, including the one below.
2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
This is featured in Freeform's 31 Nights of Halloween, so maybe it isn't as lonely or forgotten, but I still think it needs a place on the list. It is a creepy, dark, HELLA COOL musical by Tim Burton, and it's a sight to behold, truly. Sometimes it is a bit corny, but most of the time, it had me, a theatre nerd, singing along and admiring the vocal quality, and my friends, the sane moviegoers, intrigued.
3. The Worst Witch (the original version, not the Netflix series)
This movie is one I have only seen a handful of times, but it is epic. It has school, mean girls, witchcraft, and Tim Curry. Need I say more?
Okay, fine. There are also some super corny 80s effects and a family-friendly atmosphere with a very catchy intro song. Super fun, and a pretty short movie. My mom loves it, so it has to be good.
4. The Lost Boys
These were the original teen vampires, and this movie is a cult classic everyone in my mom's generation either loves or hates, and I can't get enough of it. I like to think that this is how a vampire movie SHOULD BE, but it probably falls more in line with how people see Twilight- not entirely based on the lore, and not entirely making sense, but it is good to watch, has a good mix of funny, campy, and scary, and it's one of those movies you can hoist over your friends' heads because you're cultured and they aren't.
5. Monster House
This movie is one from childhood, and deserves so much more praise than it ever got. It's adorable, creepy, and has kid-appropriate jump scares without being so silly adults can't watch it and love it. It tells the story of a group of kids in a neighborhood working together to fight a possessed house. Super adorable, and a lot of movies are following a sort of Goonie-like trope now. It got shockingly deep, though, and it'll be great for any family movie night or late night movie binge.
