Gelato World Tour
The three-year search for the best gelato in the world has been recently come to an end with the announcement of the winner. Judges toured the world for three years to find the best gelato in the world in what is called the “Gelato World Tour”.
It included competitions in several countries, 19 countries competing overall, 36 contestants ending up as the finalists.
After this three-year, gelato-infused, and gelato-enthused search, Alessandro Crispini of Spoleto, Italy has been marked the champion! He owns Gelateria Crispini. His winning gelato was a brilliant pistachio flavor. He says the pistachios were sourced from “…three different qualities of Sicilian pistachios, two from Bronte and one from Agrigento.” (Source )
Upon the announcement of the winner, I have decided to share some gelato wisdom.
What is it?
Now, what is gelato, you ask? It’s often translated as ice cream, but there is definitely a difference between the two. Imagine ice cream, but both sweeter and smoother. It’s lower in fat but higher in sugar than ice cream. It tends to have a more potent and excitingly pungent flavor.
(A more thorough exploration between these two frozen desserts can be found here )
Gelato Culture
In Italy, where gelato was founded, it’s common for kids to stop by a café after school and order up glittering scoops of this delicacy. Adults, too, enjoy this frozen gift we call ‘gelato’ oftentimes after dinner. But ultimately, any time is a good time to dive into a scoop (or two) of gelato.
Gelato School
There is a gelato University. Yes, you read that right. For people wanting to explore the art of gelato-making, this is the right school for you! It’s called Carpigiani Gelato University, also referred to as Bologna’s Ice Cream University.
Gelato is a wonderful thing, and it's so exciting there is an actual competition for it! I'm especially excited because the winner is from the Italian town I studied in this summer.
How will you celebrate the announcement of the world's best gelato? I cozied up with some yummy fro-yo. Nothing like Italian gelato, but still a delicious frozen treat nonetheless!
Happy gelato travels!
