To My High School Best Friend

Friends are the family we choose for ourselves.

Let’s take a flash back to high school, the place that we all couldn’t wait to leave. Looking back now, I realize that there’s very few people I graduated with that I actually keep in touch with because we’re all busy doing our own thing; whether that means pursuing a college degree or working, we’re all on our own path. If there’s one person that I hope I never lose contact with and stay close with throughout this crazy thing called life, it would have to be my best friend from high school.

Despite causing trouble in school, we shared many laughs and times that I will never forget. From things like laughing for no reason and confusing our parents, a paper airplane war in the library, to accidentally color coordinating at senior prom; I have shared some of my most precious memories with this kid that I call my best friend. Even when senior year came and I couldn’t wait to be away, a piece of me knew that meant not being with my best friend anymore and that broke my heart. But now summer is here and that means I can see him again and create even more memories to last a life time.

I believe your high school best friend is one of the most important relationships you will have in life, and that bond should definitely be kept and never broken. I honestly don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have this relationship in my life. Even my mother has told me multiple times that she hopes I keep in touch and stay friends with him because she saw and knew the special friendship that we share. I hope that everyone has a friendship as genuine and strong as the relationship I have with my best friend.

One thing I will always remember is his intense fear that I would fall while stunting during basketball games. I always thought it was irrational, but after having experiences where I did fall out of stunts during freshman year of college, it hit me why his fear I would fall was so great; he didn't want to see me get hurt because he cares. Now that I realize this, I'm so thankful I have a best friend like "the love whisperer" as he calls himself.

All in all, I have come to truly cherish the friendships that I do have; especially the friendship I have with my dear friend Nathan, my best friend. True friends can be hard to find, but I know I got lucky and have a true friend in Nathan; like the song says, "You got a friend in me." To him I send the biggest thank you possible for all the shennanigans we caused together, for being my best friend for all these years, and still wanting to cause ruckus with me. Here's to you, here's to me; best friends we'll always be!

There will always be new friends that come along as we get older, but I have known my best friend since we were four, maybe five years old. If there’s anything I miss more than causing ruckus in class with him, it’s simply being able to see him every day. When it was a day that I just couldn’t stand anything, he knew exactly how to make me laugh and he was the only one I would talk to all day. From going to freshman year homecoming together, being band buddies, to just being best friends; these are the memories I’ll always have and keep near and dear to my heart.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
