Open Letter To My Long Distance Best Friend

A Letter to my Person

Open Letter To My Long Distance Best Friend

Let me start this article off by saying that I have the best best friend ever. I know this is something that everyone thinks, but my best friend really is amazing. We have been through so much together and our friendship has managed to prevail. Even though we are at different colleges and I only get to see you over big breaks, I hope you know that our friendship will always be something that I cherish.

1. Even if we aren’t together, we still share moments

It never fails to make me feel nostalgic whenever I get a Snapchat from you holding that Route 44 slush with the caption “I wish you were here.” And then I normally send you a picture at Chick-fil-A captioned “Guess where I am.” I can’t imagine going to one of our places and not texting you first, after all those are our places.

2. We never fail to take each other shopping

Even though we have had to change our method, long distance will never be able to keep me from getting my besties opinion before I buy something. Whenever either of us go shopping, prepare for an influx of pictures with questions like “Do these jeans make my butt look good?” “On a scale of nun to prostitute, where does this dress fall?” and “Which do you think, this shirt or this one?” Other people may judge you for the amount of mirror outfit selfies on your phone, but whatever, you had to get your BFFs input.

3. Boys. Should we even go there?

You have never met any of the guys that I tell you about, but you probably know way more about them than the friends I have on campus. Let’s face it, on the first day of school you were the person I texted and said “Okay so there is this guy in my whatever class that is about an eight on the scale, like total dream boat.” We are best friends so of course you have stalked his Instagram, you have heard every story, and you have already given me your approval even if you have yet to be in the same state as the guy. I mean really, are you even interested in a guy if you don’t tell your best friend about it? Boys come and go, but your best friend is forever.

4. I'm at about a 9.96 on the scale

Every pair of best friends has their own code for saying that they are stressed and need help. When your best friend is down the street, you go over to their house and eat ice cream while crying, however things get a little more complicated when your best friend is long distance. Sometimes being there when your friend is freaking out means sending a million texts that say I love you and I believe in you. Sometimes it means calling them and listening to them rant for three hours. Sometimes it simply means saying “I am giving you a virtual hug, now go and eat ice cream and watch How I Met Your Mother.” It is terrible not being able to physically be there for your best friend when they need you, but as long distance BFFs we find our own way to be there in some form no matter what.

5. They are an opinion out of state

Sometimes you just need to rant about how so and so said this and how you hate your whatever professor. Long distance besties are great because they don't know anyone at your campus, so you get to fill them in on everything that makes the person so terrible at the moment. They are pretty much required to always take your side. They are always there to be the one that will listen to you, but they are also the one who will always tell you what you need to hear no matter how difficult.

6. There is always time for besties

No matter what either of us have going on in life, I love how we always manage to make time for each other whether it is through weekend three hour FaceTimes or an occasional text to tell a funny joke. Life moves on and sometimes it is difficult to stay in touch with those people who aren't living in the same place as you, but long distance bestie relationships really are proof that it is the thought that counts.

7. One Day

When we were 12, we would dream of what it would be like one day when we were older and wiser and could finally make decisions on our own. In some way we are living one day right now. We are both at college trying to find a nice rhythm between sinking and swimming. We have been dreaming of being roommates together for ten years, but now you are off at college with different roommates. We have moved on to bigger and better things, although we still agree that if one day if we are both 35 and still single, we are moving down to the beach and living together with 15 cats. That is what best friend dreams are made of.

8. There is nothing better than besties reunited

You know the feeling of that hug whenever you are finally see someone you have missed so much? Since weekends where we get to spend time together are rare, we always try to take advantage. Those few hours of nothing but laughing and storytelling are probably enough to drive most people around us crazy, but we don't care because this is all we have for a while. Soon my best friend will be leaving again and the relationship will go back to by phone only, so for now I take the moment as it is just standing there with my best friend, finally reunited at last. Now remind me again, are you sure you have to go back to college tomorrow?

This article is dedicated to Hannah,my long distance BFF. We have made it through ten years of friendship, we can make it through ten squared more. Thanks for always being my shoulder to cry on. I love you biffle and I can't wait 'til the next time I get to see you.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
