To My Graduating Best Friend

I promise our friendship does not end here.

Never have I questioned that our friendship would last a lifetime, but never did I also consider that we’d have to part ways eventually. Despite how much I’ve dreaded this moment, I know you deserve every opportunity this world can give you, and I will support you through every last one of them.

Thank you for listening to me when I felt as if I wasn’t be heard. Thank you for for your honesty and your support. Thank you for always pushing me to be the best version of myself, and never accepting anything less. Thank you for giving me a friendship that can never be replaced. Thank you for making me stronger.

I am so, so thankful to have shared this small amount of time with you. The memories you’ve given me will never be replaced. You taught me to never apologize for who I am, to never choose the easy way out, and to always trust my gut. I have you to thank for that, and I will never stop being grateful. I will never be able to repay you for what you have given me.

I encourage you to find beauty in everything, to love the world endlessly, and to look for happiness wherever you go. Regardless of where you are, just reach out and take it. Hold on to it, and never let it go. I encourage you to never change for the sake of pleasing other people, and to always remember where you came from.

Tomorrow, you’ll be exposed to new chances, and I know you’re brave enough to take them. Being in a new city does not mean your life is ending. It means independence; it means adulthood. It means you’re officially growing up. Do not waste a single moment of it. I advise you to take chances, to learn something new, and to seize every moment. Eventually, things will change, people will leave, and your unhappiness will feel like forever. I promise it isn’t; it’s only temporary.

You will struggle, but I promise you will never struggle alone.

We may not see each other every day, but you can always call, and I will always answer. On your good days, we can celebrate together, and on your bad days (and there will be bad days), we can cry together. Who knows, maybe our friendship will grow even stronger after being apart. I am excited by the dozens of possibilities your future holds, and you should be, too. I know your new home will treat you well, but you have to let it first.

I hope this can serve as a reminder that you are capable. I hope that you trust yourself, and never let your fear control you.

I hope the world is as kind to you as you have been to me. I know you deserve nothing less.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
