If you watched the Golden Globes recently, then you probably saw when Natalie Portman was announcing the nominees for best director tactically point out the lack of diversity in the director section. This year the director section consisted mostly of old white guys (like usual). Actually, since 1944 when the Golden Globes first began there have only been seven female nominees for best director!
It wasn’t until 1983 when a woman, Barbara Streisand, actually took home an award and it took 31 more years before a woman of color (Ava Duvernay for "Selma") was even nominated for the best director section.
Women have been largely underrepresented in the male-dominated world of directing they actually only make up 11%, which is a number that hasn’t changed in 20 years. Women need more representation in in Hollywood especially since Hollywood prides itself on being very progressive. Since amazing women directors are not being recognized in the awards categories here is a list of some amazing women directors that you should support.
