If you have been watching any regular TV during the past few weeks, I am sure you have noticed the shift in the types of commercials that have been playing during your shows and movies. All advertisements now seem to be based around one thing: COVID-19. And while they may feel that they are all the same, they can be very different.
Some of the commercials I have seen have been demeaning, disturbing, and downright mean. They have been about brands and big companies showing the world how amazing they have been doing in these tough times. They are trying to tell us how to feel about the situation and about their brand without us even realizing we are being brainwashed by them.
However, not every commercial has been like this. I have seen a handful of commercials that have genuinely moved me. Some of them have brought me to tears and some have made me smile, but overall, they have given me the feeling that things are going to be okay someday.
In a time like this, every company should be trying to bring people together and building people up out of the goodness of their hearts, not because it is going to benefit them in sales in the long run. If not out of the goodness of their hearts, then simply because it is the right thing to do.
The best advertisements I have seen related to the COVID-19 pandemic all have one thing in common: they are promoting happiness. They are about bringing light to the world in a time where it seems impossible to have any. They are spreading positivity and not yelling at people for stepping out of the house for an errand that is important for them. All of these advertisements made me smile, so I hope they make you smile too. That is something we could all use right now.
Frito Lay / It's about people.
Facebook / We're never lost if we can find each other.
Budweiser / One team.
Apple / Creativity goes on.
Dunkin' Donuts / Let's raise a cup.
This last commercial is one that I feel everyone should see, even though it did not necessarily make me smile. This commercial reminded me that we can get through this together, apart. I hope everyone is staying safe, healthy, and happy right now. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
