Last year's Superbowl Champion came from the AFC, so I decided to see after Free Agency which teams look best on paper from each division. There have been so many changes in the offseason that what I write now may be completely wrong, but based on my observations here are my guesses on who the best AFC teams are from each division.
AFC North: Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns made some banger acquisitions. They added Olivier Vernon, Kareem Hunt, and oh yeah Odell Beckham Jr. The offense that John Dorsey has created is going to be a juggernaut, but let's not sleep on the defense either. The Browns defense was surprisingly decent last year, and it's only going to get better this year. The Browns went from a laughing stock to Superbowl contenders in just two years. Watch out AFC North, Cleveland's dynasty is just beginning.
AFC East: New England Patriots
The Patriots didn't do much to help themselves this free agency, in fact they lost a lot of key players in the offseason, but lucky for them none of their division rivals did much to catch up to the Patriot's dynasty. While every year it seems Tom Brady leads his Patriots to the Superbowl, this upcoming season may not be that. Still, the Patriots are the best in their division and are probably going to make the playoffs...again.
AFC West: Los Angeles Chargers
Last year's division winners, the Chiefs, hurt themselves a lot this offseason. They lost key players in Dee Ford, Justin Houston, and Steven Nelson and did not do anything to make up for these losses. The Chief's achilles heel last season was their defense, and by letting their best defensive players go they made it even worse. That's where the Chargers come in. Outside of the Chiefs, they were the best team in the AFC West last season. While they themselves did not help themselves much this offseason, they kept their team pretty much intact and are pushing for another run to the Superbowl. The Chargers have a solid defense, and a powerful offense. With this they are definitely the best in the AFC West and may be the best in the AFC. I would not be surprised to see the Chargers in the Superbowl as the AFC team next season.
AFC South: Indianapolis Colts
The Colts had the most cap space in the league entering the offseason, but they didn't use much of it. Despite this they still had some solid pick ups in Devin Funchess and Justin Houston. The Colts with Andrew Luck should be division winners in the upcoming season. While the Jaguars and Titans improved, the Colt's only real threat, the Texans, did nothing to help their offensive line which was the cause of their demise last season. The Colts should be back in the playoffs again next season.
Next week watch out for the NFC teams!
