So, if you haven't checked the news lately or don't keep up with the election, you might not know that Bernie Sanders is running for president, again. I didn't even know until I browsed my Wall Street Journal app.
Honestly, I'm not too thrilled to see it.
Throwback to the days of all of the millennials freaking out over Sanders and his promise to give them their college tuition for free. Sure, 16-year-old me probably thought that was so cool.
If you really think about it, though, it's a load of bullsh*t.
Bernie Sanders is huge into socialism, which, by the way, has never worked. The main goal of socialism is to create a society where all people share the wealth in equal amounts. This doesn't exactly work because people have always been obsessed with class systems and economic rankings. Also, if we strip the wealthy of their riches, it will cause the government to become the main source of power in a community, and I don't think any of us really want that.
Bernie Sanders has also stated in the past that he wants to tax the rich more, but why is this necessary? Some of those wealthy people have worked extremely hard to get the money they have and shouldn't have to give it away or give more than others.
Through researching his new campaign and comparing it to his old one, I've seen multiple people who "hyped him up" through the last one do not feel the same now. First of all, he is pretty old. Sure, he's only about four years older now than last time, but even then he was getting up there in numbers. Sanders also has also failed to adequately address race, sexuality, or gender topics. His followers have even been dubbed "Bernie Bros" by some, which can make people uncomfy. Hillary Clinton's campaign even accused Sanders' campaign manager of sexist comments. Not that I'm a fan of hers either, but still.
In my opinion, most of Sanders's campaign ideas are based on American fantasies.
Spreading the wealth and giving out free college may seem ideal, but it's not in the best interest of our country for us to start doing stuff like that. Sanders has put himself out there as the new leader of the progressive moment, but I don't think he will be able to live up to his own standards.
Sure, the kids love him. However, we need to think about the future of our country first. In the long run, what is going to benefit us the most? Definitely not socialism. Bernie Sanders may seem like the popular choice for our next president, but I don't think he or his campaign has what it takes.
