There probably isn't a single young person who hasn't heard of the amazing gem known as Bernie Sanders. If you have a social media account, you probably have a friend that shares tons of Bernie posts a week—me being that slightly irritating friend on Facebook. However, it's starting to look like there is a strong possibility that he is not winning the nomination. We can't just look away from Hillary's large amount of delegates. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to stop supporting Bernie, but if he loses the nomination, I'm going to need to support Hillary Clinton.
However, there is a movement that has decided that no matter what happens, it's going to support Bernie or the Green Party, vote for Trump, or not vote all. It will pretty much avoid supporting "Crooked Hillary" at all costs. It's called the "Bernie or Bust" Movement. Bernie and his ideas are my heart and soul, but there is no way I'm joining this movement. Some might suggest that I don’t think progressively enough and that I don't want change in this country. Heck yeah I do. I'm tired of the government's negligence toward certain issues (like how is it possible that over half of the people in Congress believe climate change isn't real and their excuse is that they aren't scientists? That's exactly why you can't decide it's a hoax!) However, there is another threat that's bigger (like 1000 times bigger) than Hillary: The Donald. I have never seen a man so blatantly disrespectful and morally off in my life.
So how is Donald Trump my excuse against this seemingly lovely movement? The issue is that this group of people is not a tiny group. There is a good amount of people that follow Bernie and progress so passionately and I can't blame them for trying to still make him president. Bernie’s ideas are the ones I line up most to since I’m extremely on the left but there is no way this group is going to create strong enough support to make Bernie president when the media will be focusing on a Hillary vs. Donald showdown. All this will do is take away a few votes (maybe gain) for Trump and take away a whole lot of support from Hillary. Trump and Hillary are extremely close in the polls so this support could be what she needs to win. If you want progress in this country, having Donald Trump is that president would NEVER allow for that. This is the man endorsed by the KKK and North Korea. This is the man that even most of the Republican Party was against because he was too extreme and hateful. This is the man who insulted various groups of people like my Mexican self and undocumented parents. I would never want to risk putting my family or I in a situation we are discriminated for wanting a better life. Could you imagine his horrifying presidency and putting him in charge of nukes?
I know if Bernie never entered the race, I would have voted for Hillary without hesitation. I get it though. Hillary has made it hard to trust her, but she has experience, is clever and will not reach the toxicity of Trump. Unless you want to continue on a path where a hate spewing bigot is the voice that represents this country for the next four years, please consider letting go of this movement and giving her your support if she wins the nomination. If we keep showing this energy and enthusiasm for change, our voices will be heard even if we have a president who isn’t as progressive as Bernie.
