6 Things You Know If You Live In Bentonville, Arkansas

My family moved to Northwest Arkansas, or NWA when I went off to college. Specifically Bentonville, one of the towns making up NWA. So while I have never lived here longterm, I have spent the past 2 summers, winter breaks, and any other breaks in Bentonville.

In that time, I have noticed a couple of things that are very unique to the area.

1. Walmart

It is everywhere. Probably 95% of the population of NWA works for corporate, and the other 5% work in the stores. Basically. There are Walmart gas stations, and Walmart is the primary grocery store in the region. Even the children's museum has a mini-Walmart inside!

2. The Highway Is Always Under Construction

You will definitely have to drive directly next to a barrier for at least a few miles wherever you go, but hey, a small price to pay for eventual expansion of the region! I am so looking forward to the much-needed five lane highway coming (not) soon (enough)!

3. Bentonville Is Always Under Construction

This town has been attracting people from all over by the boatload (including my family) and is working hard to keep up with it's growing population. It is impossible to drive around Bentonville without seeing a house or 12 being built and the next day completed!

4. The Food Scene Is Incredible

Amazing restaurants are popping up left and right, my favorites being Pressroom, The Preacher's Son, and Oven and Tap. These restaurants are innovative and the food is impeccable, as it is composed of fresh ingredients from the region. Also- don't miss out on the amazing Mexican and Indian food that is super popular around here! In addition, there is a brand new cooking school, Brightwater, that is gaining more and more attention for it's beautiful architecture and fascinating perspective on culinary education.

5. The Art Scene Is- You Guessed It- Incredible

The Crystal Bridges Museum, a stunning building on the water that is a favorite for local high-schoolers as a prom venue, is at the forefront of this. They have beautiful exhibits including famous pieces like paintings of George Washington and the original Rosie the Riveter painting. Also not to be missed is the 21C Museum Hotel, a lovely hotel that is also open to the public as a museum.

6. Breathtaking Nature And Trails

Arkansas is called "The Natural State" for a reason- it is so beautiful. Bentonville specifically has endless hiking and biking trails. There are almost as many biking shops as there are restaurants, as biking is such a popular pastime here.

I feel so lucky to have found the hidden gem that is Bentonville. I am so proud to be able to call it my second home and urge everyone to come check out this lovely town!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
