Coming into this season, the Bengals are poised to finally make a bigger splash in postseason play. Although they have made the playoffs five seasons straight, they don't have very much to show for it. Despite having great regular season success perennially, the success has simply not translated into the postseason. This is due to a variety of reasons, the most recent being the melt down at the end of the most recent post season game with the Pittsburgh.
However, despite these troubles it finally looks as though this can be the year of the Bengals. Their quarterback, Andy Dalton, has finally matured and showed over the past season that he is ready to become an elite quarterback. If Dalton falters or is injured as in the previous season, A.J. McCarron is waiting in the wings to take the reigns once again. Being one of the more mature young backups in the league he is truly a blessing to have sitting behind Dalton. The quarterback situation is not the only position the Bengals have been blessed with talent at though. Whether you look at the tight end, running back, or offensive lines spots, you will see an incredibly talented roster with the makings of many pro bowlers. Although the receiver position is not exceedingly talented or deep, AJ Green is certainly an all-star in the number one spot. Offensively the Bengals are loaded with talent and the issue may be more with trying to find the elite players not just the outstanding ones.
Defensively, the Bengals are insanely talented along the defensive line. They return several veterans whom have made their marks and look to continue to improve. The linebackers are strong and have good depth once again. Although a few have reached the upper age limit of playing, the younger players are ready to step up. This, however, will depend on a few of the younger players learning to control themselves and their emotions. Vontez Burfict is one of these key players whom is an extraordinary talent but has some room for mental growth. Although it was not purely his actions that led to the Bengals playoff loss last season, the blame weighs a little heavier on him.
Looking at the Bengals as a whole, I see a team who has finally overcome their lack of maturity. Last season put in the spotlight the need to change the attitudes and maturity of a few individuals. Now that these players understand the real goal of their entire season, hopefully it will allow for smarter play. Yes, the NFL is a wild and unpredictable place, however, its safe to say that if the Bengals can turn in yet another winning season, they will at least get a shot at the playoffs. Its that one shot, that one chance that the Bengals need, along with avoiding mental mistakes that threaten to ruin a great season. With all of these things considered, the Bengals stand a good chance at making a strong run in the post season.
