Ever heard of work study?
I'm sure you have, given that these are college students who simply work on campus. Working on campus can benefit someone in many ways. You might not think about this, but getting to know faculty members is something that can become very handy, especially after you graduate and need some letters of recommendation. Working on campus can give you the bigger picture of what your college is all about and how things work. Whether if you are working in the mailroom, an office, admissions, or even in the campus gym. You see things from a different perspective instead of from what you're used to, which is the student perspective. Creating ties with faculty can benefit you in the long end when you start to apply for jobs or internships. Having a faculty member as a reference can look great on many resumes and for recommendation letters. You also get to learn more about the campus, where everything is, how everything works and how students react to certain information. You gain communication skills along with talking to students, and faculty. Work-Study is a minimum wage job that you actually get paid for. It's not volunteer work, although some of it can be sometimes. So next time you're on the lookout for a job where you aren't working 40 hours every two weeks, or just need a small job to keep some pocket change; look into a work-study job. You'll be surprised at everything you will see and learn.
